About

FranchiseBasics puts common US franchise-ownership concepts and the real FTC disclosure structure behind one connector, hand-curated and fully local — nothing fetched, nothing stored, and not specific to any named franchise brand. Glossary: franchise fee, royalty percentage, FDD, territory rights, encroachment, term/renewal, area developer, master franchise, working capital, non-compete, transfer fee, and the concepts behind FDD Items 3, 19, and 20. FDD contents guide: the real, numbered 23-item structure the FTC Franchise Rule (16 CFR Part 436) requires every Franchise Disclosure Document to follow, and what each item must legally contain, from Item 3 litigation through Item 23 receipts. Pre-purchase checklist: genuine due-diligence questions organized by unit economics, franchisee turnover and litigation history, territory and encroachment, fees and royalty structure, term/renewal/exit, support obligations, and professional review — each keyed to the FDD item that answers it. General educational information about franchise-ownership concepts and disclosure requirements, not legal, financial, or investment advice, and it does not evaluate any specific franchise system.

Sources: Hand-curated general US franchise-ownership reference plus the real FTC Franchise Rule (16 CFR Part 436) FDD item requirements; fully local, zero upstream calls. General educational information, not legal, financial, or investment advice.

What FranchiseBasics is for

"What does FDD stand for", "what has to be in FDD Item 19", "what questions should I ask before buying a franchise", "what's the difference between a franchise fee and a royalty", "what's an exclusive territory" — the questions someone researching franchise ownership asks before they ever talk to a franchise attorney. FranchiseBasics answers them from a hand-curated, fully local reference — no upstream calls, no accounts, nothing stored, and not specific to any named franchise brand.

FranchiseBasics is general educational information about common franchise-ownership concepts and what the FTC Franchise Rule requires a Franchise Disclosure Document to contain. It is NOT legal, financial, or investment advice, and it does not evaluate, endorse, or have any data about any specific franchise system. Always read the actual FDD for any real opportunity and have it reviewed by a franchise attorney and a CPA.

What it does

Glossary. Real franchise terminology: franchise fee, royalty percentage, FDD, territory rights, encroachment, term/renewal, area developer, master franchise, working capital, non-compete, transfer fee, and the concepts behind FDD Items 3, 19, and 20.

FDD contents guide. The real, numbered 23-item structure the FTC Franchise Rule (16 CFR Part 436) legally requires every Franchise Disclosure Document to follow, and what each item must actually contain — Item 3 litigation, Item 5 initial fees, Item 6 other fees, Item 7 initial investment, Item 12 territory, Item 17 renewal/termination/transfer, Item 19 financial performance representations (optional for the franchisor), Item 20 outlet and franchisee turnover data, and the rest. Ask for one item or all 23.

Pre-purchase checklist. A genuine due-diligence question list organized by area — unit economics, franchisee turnover and litigation history, territory and encroachment, fees and royalty structure, term and renewal and exit terms, support obligations, and professional review — with each question keyed to the specific FDD item that answers it.

What it is not

Not legal, financial, or investment advice, not a substitute for a franchise attorney or CPA, and not specific to, or an evaluation of, any named franchise brand or system. It does not have any actual franchisor's real FDD data loaded — only the general, legally required structure and content categories every FDD must follow, which apply the same way regardless of which franchise a person is considering.

Privacy policy

FranchiseBasics — Privacy Policy

Effective 28 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What FranchiseBasics is. FranchiseBasics is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for general US franchise-ownership reference information: a glossary, a guide to what the FTC Franchise Rule requires in a Franchise Disclosure Document, and a pre-purchase due-diligence checklist. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — at most a glossary search term or an FDD item number — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is computed on our server and nothing is stored. Every response is drawn from hand-curated reference content; no request is forwarded to any third party, and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant, your name, or any information about which franchise (if any) you are considering, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — every tool is computed locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. For users in California, the EU/UK and elsewhere, our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. FranchiseBasics is a general-audience service for adults; we knowingly collect no personal data from anyone.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

FranchiseBasics — Terms of Service

Effective 28 September 2026. These terms govern use of the FranchiseBasics connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. FranchiseBasics returns hand-curated, general reference content about common franchise-ownership concepts — a glossary of terms, a guide to the 23-item structure the FTC Franchise Rule requires in a Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), and a pre-purchase due-diligence checklist. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. NOT legal, financial, or investment advice. Every response from FranchiseBasics is general educational information about franchise-ownership concepts and federal disclosure requirements, prepared without knowledge of any specific franchise system, its actual FDD, or your personal financial situation. It is not a recommendation, not individualized legal, financial, or investment advice, and using the Service does not create an attorney-client or any other professional relationship. Consult a franchise attorney and a CPA before signing any franchise agreement or paying any money.
  3. Not specific to, and does not evaluate, any franchise brand. FranchiseBasics has no data about, and does not identify, endorse, recommend, or evaluate, any named franchise system. fdd_contents_guide describes the general, legally required FDD structure every franchisor must follow — not any specific franchisor's actual disclosures, which you must obtain and read directly from that franchisor.
  4. Rules change; state law adds requirements. The FTC Franchise Rule (16 CFR Part 436) sets a federal floor; a number of states impose additional registration, disclosure, or relationship-law requirements on top of it, and both federal and state franchise law change over time. Always confirm current requirements with a franchise attorney before relying on anything from this Service for an actual decision.
  5. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  6. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time.
  7. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered on our server and nothing is stored.
  8. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  9. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any legal, financial, or other loss arising from use of or reliance on the Service, including any decision to purchase or not purchase any franchise. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  10. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
