What Census Bureau (BYOK) is for

Census Bureau (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own Census Bureau data through the Census Bureau API with a key you supply (Census Data API key). Read-only: 8 tools (get_profile_for_states, get_profile_for_counties, get_profile_for_places, get_profile_for_tracts, get_profile_for_zip_areas, get_detailed_table_estimates, describe_profile_variable, describe_detailed_variable). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.census.gov. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Census Bureau. Census Bureau and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.

Ask your assistant things like:

  • "What is the median household income in each US state?"
  • "What is the population and median home value of each county in California?"
  • "What is the population of each place in Vermont?"
  • "What is the median household income in each census tract of Alameda County, California?"
  • "What is the population and median household income of ZIP area 94027?"
  • "What is the total population of each state according to the ACS 5-year detailed tables?"

What it does

  • get_profile_for_states: Get ACS 5-year data-profile variables (population, age, income, employment, housing, education, insurance) for all states or chosen states. The answer is a table: the first row holds the column names.
  • get_profile_for_counties: Get ACS 5-year data-profile variables for the counties of a state, or for all counties. The answer is a table: the first row holds the column names.
  • get_profile_for_places: Get ACS 5-year data-profile variables for the cities, towns and census-designated places of a state. The answer is a table: the first row holds the column names.
  • get_profile_for_tracts: Get ACS 5-year data-profile variables for the census tracts of a county. The answer is a table: the first row holds the column names.
  • get_profile_for_zip_areas: Get ACS 5-year data-profile variables for ZIP Code Tabulation Areas (the census approximation of ZIP codes). The answer is a table: the first row holds the column names.
  • get_detailed_table_estimates: Get ACS 5-year detailed-table estimates (B-series variables such as B01003_001E total population) for any geography the survey publishes. The answer is a table: the first row holds the column names.
  • describe_profile_variable: Look up one ACS 5-year data-profile variable by name: its label, table concept, value type and table group.
  • describe_detailed_variable: Look up one ACS 5-year detailed-table variable by name: its label, table concept, value type and table group.

BYOK key

You bring your own Census Bureau Census Data API key (https://api.census.gov/data/key_signup.html). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.census.gov over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

Data sources

Live from the Census Bureau API (api.census.gov) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://www.census.gov/data/developers/guidance/api-user-guide.html. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.

What it is not

Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Census Bureau. Census Bureau and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with. It is read-only: it never creates, changes, sends or deletes anything in your Census Bureau account.
