What College Scorecard (BYOK) is for

College Scorecard (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own College Scorecard data through the College Scorecard API with a key you supply (api.data.gov API key). Read-only: 7 tools (search_schools_by_name, list_schools_in_state, get_school, find_schools_near_zip, list_schools_by_degree_level, list_schools_by_ownership, list_schools_by_region). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.data.gov. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by College Scorecard. College Scorecard and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.

Ask your assistant things like:

  • "Find colleges with 'Boston' and 'University' in the name"
  • "What are the biggest colleges in Ohio?"
  • "Show tuition and size for the school with id 190752"
  • "Which colleges are within 10 miles of ZIP 02139?"
  • "Which colleges mainly award associate degrees in California?"
  • "List private nonprofit colleges in Massachusetts"

What it does

  • search_schools_by_name: Search US institutions by words in their name (each word at least 3 letters). Institution-level statistics only, no student records.
  • list_schools_in_state: List institutions in one US state or territory (two-letter postcode), for example the largest ones by adding sort=latest.student.size:desc.
  • get_school: Get one institution by its IPEDS unit id (the 'id' field), with the fields requested.
  • find_schools_near_zip: Find institutions within a distance of a US ZIP code.
  • list_schools_by_degree_level: List institutions by predominant undergraduate degree: 1 certificate, 2 associate, 3 bachelor's, 4 graduate only.
  • list_schools_by_ownership: List institutions by control type: 1 public, 2 private nonprofit, 3 private for-profit, optionally in one state.
  • list_schools_by_region: List institutions in one IPEDS region (0 service schools, 1 New England, 2 Mid East, 3 Great Lakes, 4 Plains, 5 Southeast, 6 Southwest, 7 Rocky Mountains, 8 Far West, 9 outlying areas).

BYOK key

You bring your own College Scorecard api.data.gov API key (https://api.data.gov/signup/). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.data.gov over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

Data sources

Live from the College Scorecard API (api.data.gov) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://github.com/RTICWDT/open-data-maker/blob/master/API.md. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.

What it is not

Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by College Scorecard. College Scorecard and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with. It is read-only: it never creates, changes, sends or deletes anything in your College Scorecard account.
