What Data Commons (BYOK) is for
Data Commons (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own Data Commons data through the Data Commons API with a key you supply (Data Commons API key). Read-only: 11 tools (find_place_by_name, find_place_by_coordinates, find_statistical_variables, get_place_basics, list_places_within, query_knowledge_graph, get_latest_observation, get_observation_series, get_observation_for_date, compare_places_latest, list_data_sources). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.datacommons.org. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Data Commons. Data Commons and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.
Ask your assistant things like:
- "What is the Data Commons id of Pune, India?"
- "Which places contain coordinates 19.07, 72.88?"
- "Which Data Commons variables measure life expectancy?"
- "What are the coordinates of California in Data Commons?"
- "List all the states in India."
- "What are the incoming property labels of geoId/06?"
What it does
find_place_by_name: Resolve a place name to Data Commons place ids (DCIDs); add context such as state or country to avoid ambiguity.find_place_by_coordinates: Find the places (city, county, state, country) that contain a latitude and longitude.find_statistical_variables: Search statistical variables (population, GDP, life expectancy, emissions and thousands more) by keywords and get their ids with a match score.get_place_basics: Get the name, latitude and longitude of one or more places by DCID.list_places_within: List the places of one type inside a parent place, for example all states of a country or all counties of a state.query_knowledge_graph: Read graph properties of a node with a relation expression, for example '->name', '->[name, latitude]' or '<-typeOf'; returns arcs and may include a nextToken.get_latest_observation: Get the most recent value of a statistical variable for a place, with the source dataset (facet) details.get_observation_series: Get all dated values of a statistical variable for a place, grouped by source dataset (facet); long series are shortened by the connector.get_observation_for_date: Get the value of a statistical variable for a place at one date; the date format depends on the variable (2020, 2020-06 or 2020-06-15).compare_places_latest: Get the latest value of a variable for every place matched by a containment expression, such as all counties of a state.list_data_sources: Show which source datasets (facets) hold a variable for a place, with date range and observation count, without returning values.
BYOK key
You bring your own Data Commons Data Commons API key (https://apikeys.datacommons.org). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.datacommons.org over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.
Data sources

Live from the Data Commons API (api.datacommons.org) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://docs.datacommons.org/api/rest/v2/. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.
What it is not
Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by Data Commons. Data Commons and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.
