What EIA (BYOK) is for

EIA (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own EIA data through the EIA API with a key you supply (EIA open data API key). Read-only: 8 tools (describe_category, describe_route, describe_subroute, get_electricity_retail_sales, list_facet_values, get_route_data, get_subroute_data, get_series_by_legacy_id). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.eia.gov. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by EIA. EIA and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.

Ask your assistant things like:

  • "What datasets does EIA offer under electricity?"
  • "What frequencies, filters and data columns does electricity/retail-sales have?"
  • "Describe an EIA route that is three levels deep: what filters and data columns does it have?"
  • "What was the residential electricity price in Colorado by month since 2024?"
  • "Which sector ids can I filter electricity retail sales by?"
  • "Get the 12 latest values of the price column of electricity/retail-sales"

What it does

  • describe_category: List the child routes (datasets or sub-categories) of a top-level EIA data category, such as electricity, with id, name and description.
  • describe_route: Describe one EIA route: its description, available frequencies, facets (filters), data columns with units, covered period and default frequency; or its child routes if it has any.
  • describe_subroute: Describe one EIA route that sits three levels deep (category/route/subroute): frequencies, facets, data columns and period, or its child routes.
  • get_electricity_retail_sales: Get U.S. electricity retail sales data (revenue, sales, average price or customer counts) by state and sector for a period range; rows carry period, state, sector, the value and its units.
  • list_facet_values: List the valid values of a facet (filter) of electricity retail sales, such as the sector ids with their names.
  • get_route_data: Get the data rows of any two-level EIA route (category/route), for example electricity/rto, with chosen data columns and period range. Facet filters are not available here; use length and period limits to keep it small.
  • get_subroute_data: Get the data rows of any three-level EIA route (category/route/subroute) with chosen data columns and period range. Facet filters are not available here.
  • get_series_by_legacy_id: Get data for an EIA version 1 series id, for example ELEC.SALES.CO-RES.A (Colorado residential electricity sales, annual), through the version 2 translation route.

BYOK key

You bring your own EIA EIA open data API key (https://www.eia.gov/opendata/register.php). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.eia.gov over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

Data sources

Live from the EIA API (api.eia.gov) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://www.eia.gov/opendata/documentation.php. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.

What it is not

Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by EIA. EIA and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with. It is read-only: it never creates, changes, sends or deletes anything in your EIA account.
