What NOAA Climate Data Online (BYOK) is for
NOAA Climate Data Online (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own NOAA Climate Data Online data through the NOAA Climate Data Online API with a key you supply (CDO token). Read-only: 9 tools (list_datasets, get_dataset, list_data_categories, list_data_types, list_location_categories, list_locations, list_stations, get_station, get_climate_data). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to www.ncei.noaa.gov. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by NOAA Climate Data Online. NOAA Climate Data Online and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.
Ask your assistant things like:
- "Which NOAA climate datasets are available?"
- "What does the GHCND dataset cover?"
- "What data categories does the GHCND dataset have?"
- "Which data types measure precipitation in GHCND?"
- "What kinds of locations can I filter NOAA climate data by?"
- "Find the NOAA location id for New York City"
What it does
list_datasets: List the Climate Data Online datasets (daily, monthly and annual summaries and others) with id, name, date coverage; each token is limited to 5 requests per second and 10000 per day.get_dataset: Get one dataset by id: name, first and last date and coverage.list_data_categories: List data categories (groups of similar data types such as temperature or precipitation), optionally for one dataset, location or station.list_data_types: List data types (for example TMAX, TMIN, PRCP) with their meaning, optionally filtered by dataset, location, station or category.list_location_categories: List location categories (city, county, state, country, climate region ...) that datasets use.list_locations: List locations (cities, counties, states, countries, ZIP codes) with ids to use in climate data requests, optionally by dataset or location category.list_stations: List weather observing stations, optionally inside a bounding box (extent) or by dataset, location or data type.get_station: Get one station by id.get_climate_data: Get observed values for one dataset between two dates, optionally for chosen data types, locations or stations. The range is at most one year (ten years for monthly and annual datasets).
BYOK key
You bring your own NOAA Climate Data Online CDO token (https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/token). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to www.ncei.noaa.gov over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.
Data sources

Live from the NOAA Climate Data Online API (www.ncei.noaa.gov) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/cdo-web/webservices/v2. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.
