What OpenEI (BYOK) is for
OpenEI (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own OpenEI data through the OpenEI API with a key you supply (OpenEI API key). Read-only: 6 tools (search_rates_by_coordinates, search_rates_by_address, list_rates_for_utility, list_rates_by_eia_id, list_rates_by_country, get_rate). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.openei.org. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by OpenEI. OpenEI and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.
Ask your assistant things like:
- "What residential electricity rates apply near latitude 37.4 and longitude -122.1?"
- "What commercial electricity rates apply at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway, Mountain View, CA?"
- "List the rates of Detroit Edison Co"
- "What rates does the utility with EIA id 5109 publish?"
- "Which electricity rates does the database hold for India?"
- "Show rate 5374efea9bef51471a6965d0 in full"
What it does
search_rates_by_coordinates: Find electricity rates for utilities serving a latitude and longitude, optionally with a search radius, sector and approval filters.search_rates_by_address: Find electricity rates for the utility serving a street address (the service geocodes it), optionally filtered by sector.list_rates_for_utility: List the rate schedules of one utility, named as in the database (the 'utility' value or page name, for example 'Detroit Edison Co').list_rates_by_eia_id: List rate schedules of the utility with a given EIA utility id.list_rates_by_country: List rate schedules for a country (ISO 3-letter code, for example USA or IND), optionally by sector; international rates need version 4 or higher.get_rate: Get one rate schedule by its label (page name), with the minimal fields or, with detail=full, every variable including tier and time-of-use structures.
BYOK key
You bring your own OpenEI OpenEI API key (https://openei.org/services/api/signup). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.openei.org over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

Live from the OpenEI API (api.openei.org) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://openei.org/services/doc/rest/util_rates/. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.
What it is not
Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by OpenEI. OpenEI and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with. It is read-only: it never creates, changes, sends or deletes anything in your OpenEI account.
