What openFDA (BYOK) is for

openFDA (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own openFDA data through the openFDA API with a key you supply (openFDA API key). Read-only: 8 tools (search_drug_adverse_events, count_drug_adverse_events, search_drug_labels, search_drug_recalls, search_food_recalls, count_food_recalls, search_device_recalls, count_device_recalls). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.fda.gov. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by openFDA. openFDA and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.

Ask your assistant things like:

  • "What adverse events were reported for ibuprofen in 2025?"
  • "What are the most reported reactions for ibuprofen?"
  • "What is the boxed warning on the label of warfarin?"
  • "Which drug recalls were classified Class I this year?"
  • "Which food recalls mention undeclared peanuts?"
  • "How many food recalls are Class I, II and III?"

What it does

  • search_drug_adverse_events: Search FDA adverse event reports about drugs: report id, receipt date, seriousness, countries, patient sex and age, reactions and the drugs listed. Reports are unverified and do not show that a drug caused the event.
  • count_drug_adverse_events: Count how often each value of an adverse-event field occurs among matching reports, for example the most frequent reactions for a drug. Returns term and count pairs.
  • search_drug_labels: Search FDA drug labels (package inserts): brand and generic names, manufacturer, route, purpose, indications, boxed warning, contraindications, warnings, adverse reactions, dosage and interactions. Label sections can be long, so use a small limit.
  • search_drug_recalls: Search FDA drug recall enforcement reports: recall number, status, classification (Class I to III), dates, recalling firm, product, reason, quantity and distribution.
  • search_food_recalls: Search FDA food recall enforcement reports: recall number, status, classification (Class I to III), dates, recalling firm, product, reason, quantity and distribution.
  • count_food_recalls: Count food recalls by the values of a field, for example by classification or by voluntary versus mandated. Returns term and count pairs.
  • search_device_recalls: Search FDA medical device recalls: event and product numbers, status, dates, recalling firm, product, reason, root cause, action, product code and device class.
  • count_device_recalls: Count device recalls by the values of a field, for example by root cause or recall status. Returns term and count pairs.

BYOK key

You bring your own openFDA openFDA API key (https://open.fda.gov/apis/authentication/). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.fda.gov over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

What it is not

Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by openFDA. openFDA and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.
