What openFEC (BYOK) is for

openFEC (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own openFEC data through the openFEC API with a key you supply (api.data.gov API key for openFEC). Read-only: 8 tools (search_candidates, get_candidate, get_candidate_totals, search_committees, get_committee, get_committee_totals, search_itemized_contributions, list_filings). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.open.fec.gov. Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by openFEC. openFEC and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with.

Ask your assistant things like:

  • "Find Senate candidates named Warren in Massachusetts"
  • "Show the FEC record of candidate P80001571"
  • "How much money did candidate H8CA05035 raise and spend?"
  • "Find PACs with 'climate' in their name"
  • "Show the FEC record of committee C00703975"
  • "What are the totals for committee C00703975 in 2024?"

What it does

  • search_candidates: Search federal candidates registered with the FEC by name, office (H, S or P), state, party, election year or cycle; returns id, name, office, party, state, district and filing dates.
  • get_candidate: Get the FEC's current record for one candidate id: name, office, party, state, district, status, election years and filing dates.
  • get_candidate_totals: Get a candidate's campaign finance totals per two-year cycle (receipts, disbursements, individual contributions, cash on hand, debts), summed over the candidate's committees.
  • search_committees: Search political committees (campaigns, PACs, parties) by name, state, party, type or candidate; returns id, name, type, designation, treasurer and filing dates.
  • get_committee: Get the FEC's current record for one committee id: name, type, designation, party, state, treasurer, filing frequency and linked candidate ids.
  • get_committee_totals: Get a committee's financial totals per two-year cycle: receipts, disbursements, individual contributions, independent expenditures, cash on hand and debts.
  • search_itemized_contributions: Search itemized receipts (Schedule A) reported by committees: amount, date, contributor name, city, state, employer, occupation and receiving committee. Pages by cursor: pass last_index and the last date or amount from the previous answer's pagination.last_indexes. FEC rules bar using contributor names or addresses to solicit contributions or for commercial purposes.
  • list_filings: List reports and forms filed with the FEC, newest first by default, for a committee or candidate: form and report type, receipt date, coverage period, receipts, disbursements, cash on hand and PDF link.

BYOK key

You bring your own openFEC api.data.gov API key for openFEC (https://api.open.fec.gov/developers/). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.open.fec.gov over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

Data sources

Live from the openFEC API (api.open.fec.gov) with a BYOK key; documentation: https://api.open.fec.gov/developers/. Endpoints checked against that documentation on 2026-10-16.

What it is not

Unofficial connector by Unify Dynamics LLC: not affiliated with, endorsed by or sponsored by openFEC. openFEC and its logos are trademarks of their owners and are used only to say which service the connector works with. It is read-only: it never creates, changes, sends or deletes anything in your openFEC account.
