What WaniKani (BYOK) is for

WaniKani (BYOK) lets an AI assistant read your own WaniKani data through the WaniKani API with a key you supply (WaniKani API v2 token (read-only is enough)). Read-only: 9 tools (get_user, get_summary, list_subjects, get_subject, list_assignments, list_review_statistics, list_level_progressions, list_spaced_repetition_systems, list_voice_actors). The BYOK key travels with each request, is used for that one call only and is never stored, logged or cached; it is only ever sent to api.wanikani.com. Ask your assistant things like:

  • "What WaniKani level am I on?"
  • "How many WaniKani reviews do I have coming up today?"
  • "Show the kanji taught at WaniKani level 1"
  • "What does WaniKani subject 440 mean and how is it read?"
  • "Which of my WaniKani items are available for review right now?"
  • "Which WaniKani items am I getting wrong most often?"

What it does

  • get_user: Get the account the token belongs to: username, current level, start date, subscription type and study preferences.
  • get_summary: Get the lessons available now and the reviews coming in the next 24 hours, grouped by hour, with the subject ids in each batch.
  • list_subjects: List WaniKani reference subjects (radicals, kanji, vocabulary) filtered by type, level or slug, with meanings and readings. Up to 1000 per page.
  • get_subject: Get one radical, kanji or vocabulary item by its subject id with meanings, readings, level and component ids.
  • list_assignments: List the token owner's assignments (their progress per subject): SRS stage, unlock, start, pass and burn dates, and when each next becomes available.
  • list_review_statistics: List the token owner's review statistics per subject: correct and incorrect counts, streaks and percentage correct.
  • list_level_progressions: List the token owner's level progressions: when each level was unlocked, started, passed, completed or abandoned.
  • list_spaced_repetition_systems: List the spaced repetition systems with their stage intervals, which explain how long each SRS stage waits before the next review.
  • list_voice_actors: List the voice actors whose recordings accompany vocabulary, with gender and accent description.

BYOK key

You bring your own WaniKani WaniKani API v2 token (read-only is enough) (https://www.wanikani.com/settings/personal_access_tokens). Your assistant sends it in the X-Upstream-Key header with each request. ConnectorBay uses it for that one call only: it is never stored, logged or cached, never shown in an answer, and it is only sent to api.wanikani.com over https, with no redirects followed. Create a key with the fewest permissions the tools need (read-only if the provider offers it), and revoke it at the provider whenever you like.

Notices

WaniKani's API terms forbid abusive request rates and sharing tokens to exceed rate limits; the personal tools return the token owner's learning progress.
