What EU Eurostat Lens is for

Fetches a Eurostat dataset by code with dimension filters from the Statistics API (JSON-stat 2.0, no key), and turns the sparse value object into rows keyed by country and period by cell position, never by the order in which values appear (a summarising reader mapped values to the wrong countries in an earlier test). Describes a dataset (label, update date, dimensions), finds its latest period, ranks countries for one period, maps Eurostat geo codes (EL for Greece, UK for the United Kingdom) to names, and builds the request URL for transparency. Every answer states the dataset, the query, Eurostat's update date and the re-use condition (source indicated as Eurostat; modifications stated). Data on countries other than EU Member States, EFTA and official candidate countries, and some trade data, carry a non-commercial re-use restriction. Large requests may be answered asynchronously by Eurostat: the connector reports that and asks for narrower filters instead of waiting. Statistics for market sizing and benchmarking: general information, not advice.

Ask your assistant things like:

  • "What is the latest period Eurostat holds for the minimum wage dataset earn_mw_cur?"
  • "Rank the EU countries by monthly minimum wage in the latest half-year, in euro."
  • "Pull Eurostat dataset earn_mw_cur for Germany and France for 2026-S1 as a table."
  • "What dimensions does this Eurostat dataset have and when was it last updated?"
  • "I have a JSON-stat answer from Eurostat and need the value for each country decoded correctly. Also, what does the code EL mean?"

What it does

  • get_dataset: Fetch a Eurostat dataset by code with dimension filters and return tidy rows decoded by cell position, with the update date and re-use note.
  • decode_jsonstat: Decode a JSON-stat 2.0 dataset you already hold into tidy rows keyed by dimension codes, by cell position (offline).
  • describe_dataset: Label, update date, dimensions (with category counts) and the query used for one Eurostat dataset.
  • latest_period: The most recent time period Eurostat holds for a dataset (with your filters) and the dataset's update date.
  • compare_countries: Rank the countries of a dataset for one period (latest by default); every other dimension must be fixed by your filters.
  • country_names: Map Eurostat geo codes to names and back (EL is Greece, UK the United Kingdom) for the 39 codes Eurostat's earn_mw_cur answer labels.
  • build_query_url: Build the Statistics API request URL for a dataset and filters (nothing is fetched).

Data sources

Reference data from official sources (ec.europa.eu); every answer states its source, date and validity period.

What it is not

EU Eurostat Lens is independent; not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by any government body, central bank, standards body or scheme operator. Names of rails, schemes and standards are used only to say what a tool works with. It is read-only: it never sends, pays, files or signs anything for you, and it never looks up private individuals.

Built for: European Union. Languages: English.

Tools

Look up & validate

get_dataset — Fetch a Eurostat dataset by code with dimension filters and return tidy rows decoded by cell position, with the update date and re-use note. Use for "Pull Eurostat dataset earn_mw_cur for Germany and France for 2026-S1 as a table.". Args: dataset_code, filters, last_periods, since, max_rows, detail.

Calculate

compare_countries — Rank the countries of a dataset for one period (latest by default); every other dimension must be fixed by your filters. Use for "Rank the EU countries by monthly minimum wage in the latest half-year, in euro.". Args: dataset_code, filters, period, order, top.

Build & format

build_query_url — Build the Statistics API request URL for a dataset and filters (nothing is fetched). Use for "What URL do I call to get Eurostat dataset earn_mw_cur for Germany in 2026-S1?". Args: dataset_code, filters, last_periods.

Reference & guides

decode_jsonstat — Decode a JSON-stat 2.0 dataset you already hold into tidy rows keyed by dimension codes, by cell position (offline). Use for "I have a JSON-stat answer from Eurostat and need the value for each country decoded correctly.". Args: dataset, max_rows.

describe_dataset — Label, update date, dimensions (with category counts) and the query used for one Eurostat dataset. Use for "What dimensions does this Eurostat dataset have and when was it last updated?". Args: dataset_code, filters.

latest_period — The most recent time period Eurostat holds for a dataset (with your filters) and the dataset's update date. Use for "What is the latest period Eurostat holds for the minimum wage dataset earn_mw_cur?". Args: dataset_code, filters.

country_names — Map Eurostat geo codes to names and back (EL is Greece, UK the United Kingdom) for the 39 codes Eurostat's earn_mw_cur answer labels. Use for "What does the Eurostat code EL mean, and which code is Greece?". Args: query.

Answer size (detail)

get_dataset answers with detail=summary by default: at most 50 rows unless max_rows is given, about 9 to 13 KB (a row is 130 to 200 bytes, more with more dimensions). The answer says when it truncated. detail=full allows 200 rows by default (about 28 to 40 KB), the same answer as before wave 19; max_rows up to 1000 always wins in both forms (about 130 KB at 1000 rows). decode_jsonstat is unchanged (200 rows by default).

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.
