About

Gambit is a hand-curated chess opening theory reference. opening_info looks up one named opening (Ruy Lopez, Sicilian Najdorf, Queen's Gambit Declined, King's Indian Defense, and 47 more) and returns its move sequence in algebraic notation, ECO code range, strategic idea and typical resulting pawn structure/plan; opening_search finds openings by partial name, family or idea keyword. openings_by_eco_code groups every opening in the dataset under one ECO letter (A-E) with a plain-language summary of that range; eco_code_lookup is the reverse — hand it a specific code like C60 or B90 and get back the opening family it belongs to. openings_for_white suggests a few named openings for a chosen style (aggressive, positional, gambit, solid); openings_for_black does the same for Black's replies to 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4 or 1.Nf3. gambit_guide explains what a chess gambit actually is and lists every named gambit in the dataset with its basic idea. opening_principles covers general opening guidelines — center control, development, castling early — phrased as guidelines rather than absolute rules. chess_glossary defines opening-theory terms: ECO code, fianchetto, tempo, zwischenzug, transposition and more. Keyless; fully local; a reference to standard, well-documented opening theory, not live game data or an engine.

Sources: Hand-curated from standard, well-documented public chess opening theory as of build date; fully local, zero upstream calls

What Gambit is for

The question that comes up whenever chess opening theory gets mentioned — what's the move order for the Ruy Lopez, what ECO codes cover the Sicilian, what's actually different between the Najdorf and the Dragon, what's a zwischenzug — answered from one hand-curated, verified opening encyclopedia, without a scroll through a dozen opening-explorer sites.

What it does

Move sequences (in algebraic notation), ECO code ranges, strategic ideas and typical resulting pawn structures/plans for 51 hand-verified named openings and variations — from the Ruy Lopez, Italian Game and Four Knights through the Sicilian's Najdorf, Dragon and Scheveningen, the French, Caro-Kann, the full Queen's Gambit family, the King's Indian, Nimzo-Indian, Grünfeld, Catalan, London and Colle Systems, to well-known gambits like the King's Gambit, Evans Gambit, Danish Gambit, Budapest Gambit and Blackmar-Diemer (opening_info, opening_search). Every opening in the dataset grouped by its ECO classification letter A through E (openings_by_eco_code), plus the reverse lookup — hand a specific code like C60 or B90 back and get the opening family it belongs to (eco_code_lookup). A few named openings suited to a chosen style — aggressive, positional, gambit, or solid — from White's side (openings_for_white) or as Black's reply to 1.e4, 1.d4, 1.c4 or 1.Nf3 (openings_for_black). An explanation of what a gambit actually is plus every named gambit in the dataset with its basic idea (gambit_guide). General opening principles — center control, development, castling early — phrased as guidelines rather than absolute rules (opening_principles). And a glossary of ~14 opening-theory terms: ECO code, fianchetto, tempo, zwischenzug, transposition, and more (chess_glossary).

What it is not

Not a live database of cutting-edge theory, an engine, or a game-data connector — Gambit is a fixed, hand-curated reference of standard, well-documented opening theory (the kind found in any solid opening manual), verified against public chess reference material as of the build date stated in its own data. It won't tell you today's top players' latest novelties, evaluate a position, or pull a live game or rating — for that, use a connector built for live chess data instead (this batch's Arcade connector, for instance). Gambit also isn't exhaustive: thousands of named sub-variations exist in chess theory, and this dataset sticks to the openings and variations most players will actually ask about by name.

Tools

Openings

opening_info — One named opening's move sequence (algebraic notation), ECO code range, strategic idea, and typical resulting pawn structure/plan. Use for "what's the Ruy Lopez", "moves for the Italian Game", "what's the idea of the Grünfeld". Args: name.

opening_search — Search the dataset by partial opening name, alias, ECO family, or a keyword from its strategic idea. Use for "which openings involve a fianchetto", "list Sicilian variations in this dataset". Args: query.

ECO codes

openings_by_eco_code — Every opening in this dataset under one ECO classification letter (A: flank/irregular, B: 1.e4 non-e5 replies incl. the Sicilian, C: 1.e4 e5 and the French, D: 1.d4 d5 closed games, E: 1.d4 Nf6 Indian systems), plus a plain-language summary of that letter range. Use for "what's in ECO class B", "list all the C-code openings here". Args: eco_letter.

eco_code_lookup — Reverse lookup: given one specific ECO code (e.g. 'C60'), returns which opening family it refers to in this dataset — the narrowest matching entry plus any broader families it also falls under — where known. Use for "what opening is ECO code C60", "what does B90 mean". Args: code.

Suggestions

openings_for_white — A few named openings commonly recommended for a given style, played as White. Use for "aggressive opening for White", "what's a solid opening to play as White". Args: style.

openings_for_black — Common Black replies to a given White first move, optionally filtered by style. Use for "what should Black play against 1.e4", "aggressive reply to 1.d4", "how should Black meet 1.c4". Args: response_to, style.

Reference

gambit_guide — What a chess gambit is (deliberately offering material — usually a pawn — for development, central control, open lines, or the initiative) plus a list of well-known named gambits in this dataset with their basic idea. Use for "what's a gambit", "list some famous chess gambits".

opening_principles — General chess opening principles (control the center, develop knights before bishops as a common guideline, castle early, don't move the same piece twice without reason, don't bring the queen out too early, ...), phrased as guidelines rather than absolute rules. Use for "what are the opening principles in chess", "chess opening rules for beginners".

chess_glossary — Definitions of common chess opening-theory terms (ECO code, gambit, fianchetto, transposition, tempo, zwischenzug, opening theory vs. middlegame, ...). Use for "what does fianchetto mean", "what's a zwischenzug". Args: term.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.

Gambit — Privacy Policy

Effective 24 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What Gambit is. Gambit is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for a hand-curated chess opening theory reference: named openings and variations with move sequences, ECO codes, strategic ideas and pawn structures, style-based suggestions, a gambit guide, opening principles and a glossary. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — an opening name, a search term, an ECO letter or code, a style, a White first move, or a glossary term — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is answered from a bundled, hand-curated reference file and nothing is stored. No request is forwarded to any third party — there is no upstream call at all, live or otherwise — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant or your name, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — the entire dataset is bundled with the server and answered locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. Gambit is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

Gambit — Terms of Service

Effective 24 September 2026. These terms govern use of the Gambit connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. Gambit returns a hand-curated chess opening theory reference — named openings and variations with move sequences, ECO codes, strategic ideas and pawn structures, style-based suggestions, a gambit guide, opening principles and a glossary — from data verified against public chess reference material at build time. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. Not a live database, not an engine. Gambit is an independent reference tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by FIDE, any chess federation, publisher, or player. It does not evaluate positions, generate moves, provide live games, ratings or puzzles, or track the latest theoretical developments, and nothing in the Service should be relied on as move-by-move engine analysis.
  3. Theory evolves. Opening evaluations and popularity shift with new high-level games and analysis; the move sequences and ECO ranges here reflect standard, well-documented theory as of the build date stated in the Service's own data, and won't reflect the very latest novelties.
  4. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  5. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time.
  6. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered from a bundled reference file, and nothing is stored.
  7. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  8. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any loss arising from use of or reliance on the Service. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  9. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
