Real questions, and the tools your agent calls to answer them.
ip_type_overviewip_decision_treeprovisional_patent_deadlineip_protection_checklistip_glossaryIPBasics puts common US intellectual-property concepts behind one connector, hand-curated and fully local — nothing fetched, nothing stored. ip_type_overview explains what trademark, copyright, and patent each protect, their real basic process (USPTO trademark search + application; copyright registration benefits despite automatic protection; patent types and the real provisional 12-month deadline), duration, and common mistakes. ip_decision_tree routes a free-text description of what you want to protect to the right IP type(s) via real keyword scoring, showing every category's score. provisional_patent_deadline computes the real 12-month non-provisional filing deadline from a provisional filing date, including the leap-year edge case. ip_protection_checklist gives a step-by-step checklist per IP type. ip_glossary defines prior art, claims, office action, trade dress, fair use, public domain, first-to-file, and more. General educational information, not legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship.
Sources: Computed locally / hand-curated US IP-basics reference (trademark/copyright/patent process overviews, decision-tree keyword rules, provisional-deadline statutory rule, protection checklists, glossary); fully local, zero upstream calls. General education, not legal advice.

"What's the difference between a trademark and a copyright", "do I need a patent or a copyright for my software", "if I filed a provisional patent in March, when do I need to file the real application", "what kind of protection do I need for my invention" — the plain-language IP questions people have before they ever call an attorney. IPBasics answers them from a hand-curated, fully local reference and a couple of real calculations — no upstream calls, nothing stored.
IPBasics is general educational information about common US intellectual-property concepts. It is NOT legal advice, and using it does NOT create an attorney-client relationship. Always consult a licensed IP attorney for your specific name, work, or invention.
ip_type_overview explains what each of trademark, copyright, and patent actually protects, the real
basic process for each (a USPTO trademark search and application; copyright registration and the real
benefits it adds even though protection is automatic; patent types — utility, design, provisional — and
the real 12-month provisional deadline), duration, and a common mistake people make with each.
ip_decision_tree takes a free-text description of what you want to protect and routes it, via real
keyword scoring, to the right IP type or types — showing every category's score so the routing isn't a
black box. provisional_patent_deadline computes the real 12-month non-provisional filing deadline from a
provisional application's filing date, including the Feb 29 leap-year edge case — missing this deadline
permanently loses the provisional's earlier priority date. ip_protection_checklist gives a step-by-step
checklist for protecting one IP type. ip_glossary defines terms like prior art, claims, office action,
trade dress, fair use, public domain, and first-to-file.
Not legal advice, not a filing service, not a substitute for a licensed IP attorney, and it does not create an attorney-client relationship. The decision tree is a keyword heuristic, not a legal determination — a name, work, or invention can genuinely need more than one type of protection, and only an attorney reviewing your specific situation can tell you for sure.

What IPBasics is. IPBasics is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for trademark/copyright/patent educational reference content: process overviews, a decision-tree classifier, a provisional-patent deadline calculator, protection checklists, and a glossary. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup or calculation. IPBasics is general education, NOT legal advice, and does not create an attorney-client relationship.
What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — a glossary term, an IP type, a filing date, or a free-text description of what you want to protect (e.g. "a name for my coffee brand") — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.
Everything is computed on our server and nothing is stored. Every response is drawn from hand-curated, bundled reference content or a transparent local calculation; no request is forwarded to any third party — not the USPTO, not the Copyright Office, not any law firm — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.
What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant, the actual name, work, or invention you're trying to protect beyond the free-text description you choose to pass to a lookup, or any filing you've actually made, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.
Sub-processors. None — every tool is computed locally, and there is no integration with the USPTO, the Copyright Office, or any law firm or filing service. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).
Legal bases and your rights. For users in California, the EU/UK and elsewhere, our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.
Children. IPBasics is a general-audience service for adults; we knowingly collect no personal data from anyone.
Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.
Effective 28 September 2026. These terms govern use of the IPBasics connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").
ip_decision_tree scores a
free-text description against keyword lists for trademark, copyright, and patent. It can miss context, is
not a substitute for a professional's analysis, and a single project can genuinely need more than one
type of protection at once.provisional_patent_deadline computes the general 12-month statutory deadline under 35 U.S.C. 119(e). It
does not check USPTO holidays, weekend extensions, or your specific application's actual status — always
confirm the exact deadline with a patent attorney or the USPTO's own records before relying on it.Email agent@connectorbay.com. We answer within two business days.
