About

NonprofitStart puts common US 501(c)(3) formation steps and one real computed check behind one connector, hand-curated and fully local — nothing fetched, nothing stored. Formation checklist: real steps by stage — incorporate (state nonprofit incorporation with the IRS-required purpose/dissolution language, directors, registered agent, EIN), apply for exemption (Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ, filing and fees, state tax exemption, charitable solicitation registration), governance (bylaws, conflict-of-interest policy, officers, organizational meeting), and ongoing compliance (annual Form 990-series filing, UBIT, state renewals, public disclosure). Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ eligibility check: real computed logic against the IRS's documented Form 1023-EZ Eligibility Worksheet thresholds (projected/actual annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less, total assets of $250,000 or less) plus the real categorical exclusions (LLC structure, churches/schools/hospitals/509(a)(3) supporting organizations, previously revoked exemption) — returns which form to file and every disqualifying reason found. Board governance basics: board of directors, bylaws, conflict-of-interest policy, officers, the private-inurement prohibition, and meeting minutes. Glossary: 501(c)(3), Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ, Form 990/990-EZ/990-N, public charity vs. private foundation, UBIT, exempt purpose, private inurement, automatic revocation. General educational information about common formation steps, not legal or tax advice, and not a complete formation guide for any specific organization.

Sources: Hand-curated general US nonprofit-formation reference plus the real, documented IRS Form 1023-EZ Eligibility Worksheet thresholds and Form 990-series filing thresholds; fully local, zero upstream calls. General educational information, not legal or tax advice.

What NonprofitStart is for

"How do I start a 501(c)(3)", "do we qualify for the 1023-EZ", "what has to be in nonprofit bylaws", "what happens if we miss filing our 990", "what's the difference between a public charity and a private foundation" — the formation questions a founder asks before they ever call a nonprofit attorney or CPA. NonprofitStart answers them from a hand-curated reference plus one real computed check — no upstream calls, no accounts, nothing stored.

NonprofitStart is general educational information about common US nonprofit-formation steps. It is NOT legal or tax advice. It does not know your state, your organization's actual finances, or the facts of your situation. Always confirm specifics with a licensed attorney, a CPA experienced with exempt organizations, or the IRS before filing anything.

What it does

Formation checklist. Real steps organized by stage: incorporate (state nonprofit incorporation with the IRS-required exempt-purpose and dissolution-clause language, appointing directors and a registered agent, obtaining an EIN), apply for exemption (choosing Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ, filing and fees, state tax exemption, charitable solicitation registration), governance (bylaws, a conflict-of-interest policy, officers, the organizational board meeting), and ongoing compliance (annual Form 990-series filing, UBIT, state renewals, public disclosure).

Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ eligibility check. A real computed check against the IRS's documented Form 1023-EZ Eligibility Worksheet thresholds: projected (or actual) annual gross receipts of $50,000 or less, and total assets of $250,000 or less — plus the real categorical exclusions (an LLC structure, being a church, school, hospital, or Section 509(a)(3) supporting organization, or having had tax-exempt status previously revoked). Give it your numbers and it returns which form to file and every disqualifying reason found.

Board governance basics. The real required and recommended elements: a board of directors, bylaws, a conflict-of-interest policy, officers, the private-inurement prohibition (earnings may never benefit a private individual), and meeting minutes.

Glossary. Plain-language definitions: 501(c)(3), Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ, Form 990/990-EZ/990-N, public charity vs. private foundation, UBIT, exempt purpose, private inurement, conflict-of-interest policy, charitable solicitation registration, and automatic revocation.

What it is not

Not legal or tax advice, not a complete formation guide for any specific organization, and not a substitute for a licensed attorney, a CPA experienced with exempt organizations, or the IRS. The eligibility check covers the most common Form 1023-EZ exclusions, not every condition on the IRS's full worksheet (e.g. it does not ask about a US mailing address or a current IRS examination). State incorporation requirements, IRS user fees, and processing times vary and change over time.

NonprofitStart — Privacy Policy

Effective 28 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What NonprofitStart is. NonprofitStart is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for US 501(c)(3) nonprofit-formation reference information: a checklist by stage, a Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ eligibility check, board-governance basics, and a glossary. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — at most a formation-stage name, a glossary search term, or, for the eligibility check, a projected gross-receipts figure and a total-assets figure plus a few yes/no flags — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is computed on our server and nothing is stored. Every response is drawn from hand-curated reference content or computed from documented IRS thresholds; no request is forwarded to any third party, and no query — including any financial figures you enter — is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant, your organization's name, EIN, or any identifying information about your organization beyond the bare financial figures you pass to the eligibility check, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — every tool is computed locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. For users in California, the EU/UK and elsewhere, our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. NonprofitStart is a general-audience service for adults; we knowingly collect no personal data from anyone.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

NonprofitStart — Terms of Service

Effective 28 September 2026. These terms govern use of the NonprofitStart connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. NonprofitStart returns hand-curated, general reference content about common US 501(c)(3) nonprofit-formation steps — a checklist by stage, a computed Form 1023 vs. 1023-EZ eligibility check, board-governance basics, and a glossary. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. NOT legal or tax advice. Every response from NonprofitStart is general educational information about common formation steps and documented IRS thresholds, prepared without knowledge of your state, your organization's actual finances and governing documents, or the facts of your situation. It is not a recommendation, not individualized legal or tax advice, and using the Service does not create an attorney-client or any other professional relationship. Consult a licensed attorney, a CPA experienced with exempt organizations, or the IRS before filing anything.
  3. Eligibility check is not a filing determination. form_1023_eligibility_check applies the IRS's documented Form 1023-EZ Eligibility Worksheet gross-receipts and total-assets thresholds plus the most common categorical exclusions. It does not check every condition on the IRS's full worksheet (for example, the US-mailing-address requirement or a current IRS examination) and is not a substitute for reviewing the actual worksheet or consulting a professional before filing.
  4. Rules change. IRS forms, user fees, dollar thresholds, and processing times, as well as state nonprofit incorporation and charitable-solicitation requirements, change by legislation and regulation over time. Always confirm current requirements with a licensed professional or irs.gov before relying on anything from this Service for an actual filing.
  5. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  6. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time.
  7. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered on our server and nothing is stored.
  8. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  9. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any legal, financial, or other loss arising from use of or reliance on the Service, including a rejected or delayed exemption application. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  10. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
