About

Raag (Melody) is a hand-curated Hindustani and Carnatic classical raga reference. raga_info gives one raga's parent thaat (Hindustani) or melakarta (Carnatic), aroha/avaroha where confidently documented, vadi/samvadi where established, traditional time of day, mood/rasa and season; raga_search does a keyword search across name, thaat, tradition and mood. ragas_by_time groups ragas by traditional time of day (early morning, morning, afternoon, evening, night, late night); ragas_by_thaat groups Hindustani ragas under their parent thaat (Bilawal, Kalyan, Khamaj, Bhairav, Bhairavi, Kafi, Asavari, Marwa, Purvi, Todi). swar_reference lists the seven swaras with Western note-name mapping and komal/shuddha/tivra variants. tala_info covers common talas (Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Ektaal, Rupak, Dadra, Keherwa) with beat counts and vibhag structure. instrument_guide covers classical instruments across both traditions (sitar, tabla, sarod, bansuri, harmonium, tanpura, veena, mridangam, Carnatic-style violin). carnatic_hindustani_compare explains the key structural differences between the two systems factually, without ranking either. music_glossary defines core terms (raga, tala, gharana, gamaka, alap, bandish, sargam, ...). random_raga returns a raga for a 'raga of the day' prompt. Deliberately conservative: where a note sequence or classification is genuinely contested, the data describes it qualitatively rather than risk a wrong sequence. Keyless; fully local; zero upstream calls.

Sources: Hand-curated against standard, widely-published musicology (Bhatkhande's Hindustani thaat classification, Venkatamakhin's Carnatic melakarta system) as of build date; fully local, zero upstream calls

What Raag (Melody) is for

The question that comes up whenever Hindustani or Carnatic classical music enters a conversation — what raga is this, when is it traditionally sung, what does "vadi" mean, how many beats are in Teentaal — answered from one hand-curated, conservative reference, without hunting across forum threads of varying reliability.

What it does

A profile for each of 38 well-known ragas across both the Hindustani and Carnatic traditions — parent thaat or melakarta, aroha/avaroha (ascending/descending notes) where the sequence is confidently documented, vadi/samvadi (most/second-most important notes) where established, traditional time of day, mood/rasa, and season where one applies (raga_info, raga_search); ragas grouped by traditional time of day (ragas_by_time) or by their Hindustani parent thaat (ragas_by_thaat); the seven swaras with a Western note-name mapping and their komal/shuddha/tivra variants (swar_reference); common talas — Teentaal, Jhaptaal, Ektaal, Rupak, Dadra, Keherwa — with beat counts and vibhag structure (tala_info); a reference guide to classical instruments across both traditions (instrument_guide); a short, factual, non-judgmental explainer of how the Hindustani and Carnatic systems differ structurally (carnatic_hindustani_compare); a glossary of core terms like raga, tala, gharana and gamaka (music_glossary); and a random pick for a "raga of the day" (random_raga).

What it is not

Not a substitute for training under a qualified teacher (guru) — gamaka, ornamentation and the fine points of a raga's chalan (melodic movement) are transmitted aurally and can't be fully captured in text, let alone a short reference entry. Raag (Melody) is deliberately conservative: where a raga's exact note sequence or classification is genuinely contested, debated across gharanas, or heavily dependent on ornamentation to convey correctly, this data describes it qualitatively rather than asserting a precise sequence it can't fully verify — real musicians rely on this, so a wrong note is worse than no note. Fully local, zero upstream calls, nothing stored.

Tools

Ragas

raga_info — One raga's parent thaat (Hindustani) or melakarta (Carnatic), aroha/avaroha, vadi/samvadi where established, traditional time of day, mood/rasa, and season if any. Use for "tell me about raga Yaman", "what's the parent scale of Kalyani". Args: name.

raga_search — Keyword search across every raga's name, thaat/melakarta, tradition and mood. Use for "find ragas with a romantic mood", "which ragas are in the Kafi thaat". Args: query.

random_raga — A random raga from this dataset — good for a "raga of the day" prompt. Use for "give me a raga of the day", "surprise me with a raga". Args: seed.

By time & thaat

ragas_by_time — Ragas traditionally associated with a time of day. This time theory is a largely Hindustani convention; most Carnatic ragas in this dataset are not tied to a fixed daily slot and won't appear here. Use for "which ragas are performed in the evening", "what should I listen to late at night". Args: time_of_day.

ragas_by_thaat — Hindustani ragas grouped under one of the ten parent thaats (Bilawal, Kalyan, Khamaj, Bhairav, Bhairavi, Kafi, Asavari, Marwa, Purvi, Todi). Use for "which ragas belong to the Bhairav thaat". Args: thaat.

Theory

swar_reference — The seven swaras (Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni) with an approximate Western note-name mapping and their komal (flat)/shuddha (natural)/tivra (sharp) variants. Use for "what are the Indian classical notes", "what does komal mean".

tala_info — A tala's beat count and vibhag (division) structure, or the full list of common talas. Use for "how many beats in Teentaal", "explain Rupak tala". Args: name.

carnatic_hindustani_compare — A short, factual explainer of the key structural differences between the Hindustani and Carnatic classical systems (parent-scale system, gamaka, compositional forms, tala system, concert structure) — non-judgmental about either tradition. Use for "how is Carnatic music different from Hindustani".

Reference

instrument_guide — A classical instrument's family, how it's played, and its typical role. Use for "how is a sitar played", "what's the difference between tabla and mridangam". Args: name.

music_glossary — Definitions of common Hindustani/Carnatic classical-music terms (raga, tala, gharana, gamaka, alap, bandish, sargam, shruti, laya, sam, khali, tihai). Use for "what does gamaka mean", "what's a gharana". Args: term.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.

Raag (Melody) — Privacy Policy

Effective 24 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What Raag (Melody) is. Raag (Melody) is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for a hand-curated Hindustani and Carnatic classical raga reference: raga profiles, talas, swaras, instruments, a tradition comparison, and a glossary. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — a raga name, a keyword, a time of day, a thaat, a tala or instrument name, or a glossary term — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is answered from a bundled, hand-curated reference file and nothing is stored. No request is forwarded to any third party — there is no upstream call at all, live or otherwise — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant or your name, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — the entire dataset is bundled with the server and answered locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. Raag (Melody) is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

Raag (Melody) — Terms of Service

Effective 24 September 2026. These terms govern use of the Raag (Melody) connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. Raag (Melody) returns a hand-curated Hindustani and Carnatic classical raga reference — raga profiles (thaat/melakarta, aroha/avaroha, vadi/samvadi, time of day, mood), talas, swaras, an instrument guide, a tradition comparison, and a glossary — from data verified against standard, widely-published musicology at build time. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. A reference, not a lesson. Raag (Melody) is an independent reference tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by any gharana, institution, artist, or organization. It is not a substitute for training under a qualified teacher, and it deliberately omits or hedges details it cannot verify with confidence rather than assert something that could mislead a musician.
  3. Facts and conventions vary. Raga classification, time-of-day convention, and stylistic detail vary across gharanas and sources; this Service reflects mainstream, widely-published musicology as of the build date stated in its own data.
  4. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  5. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time.
  6. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered from a bundled reference file, and nothing is stored.
  7. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  8. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any loss arising from use of or reliance on the Service. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  9. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
