About

Reef puts aquarium stocking and fish-care reference behind one connector. fish_species_info gives a full care profile for one of 36 common freshwater and saltwater species — minimum tank size, temperament, water-parameter targets, diet and care level; fish_search finds species by keyword. compatibility_check takes a stocking list and flags aggressive-vs-peaceful clashes, fin-nippers paired with long-finned fish, territorial species that need their own tank, and freshwater/saltwater mismatches, by matching each species' own data rather than a static pairing table. stocking_calculator applies the commonly-cited inches-per-gallon rule of thumb to a stocking list, clearly caveated as a rough guideline; tank_size_calculator computes real US gallons and liters from tank dimensions. water_parameter_guide gives target pH/temperature/hardness ranges for six setup types (community freshwater, goldfish/coldwater, African cichlid, planted, reef saltwater, fish-only saltwater). cycling_guide explains the nitrogen cycle and a typical fishless-cycling timeline. plant_care_guide covers six common aquarium plants; aquarium_glossary defines hobby terms. Keyless; fully local; general guidance, not veterinary advice.

Sources: Hand-curated from general hobbyist and published husbandry guidance as of build date; fully local, zero upstream calls

What Reef is for

The questions that come up before and during setting up a fish tank — what size tank a species actually needs, whether two fish can live together, how many gallons a tank really holds, what the nitrogen cycle even is, and what a term like "dKH" means — answered from one hand-curated, fully local reference, with no upstream calls.

What it does

Full care profiles for 36 common freshwater and saltwater species — minimum tank size, temperament, water- parameter targets (pH/temperature), diet, and a care-level rating — covering neon tetra, betta, guppy, angelfish, corydoras, platy, molly, goldfish, oscar, discus, zebra danio, clown loach, cherry barb, tiger barb, gourami, plecostomus, African cichlids (as a group), clownfish, damselfish, yellow tang, royal gramma, firefish and more (fish_species_info, fish_search). A genuine compatibility checker that matches each species' own temperament and behavior tags — not a static pairing table — to flag aggressive-vs-peaceful clashes, fin- nippers paired with long-finned fish, territorial species that generally need their own tank, and freshwater/ saltwater mismatches (compatibility_check). A stocking-density guideline using the commonly-cited "inch of adult fish per gallon" rule of thumb (stocking_calculator), and a real tank-volume calculator from dimensions (tank_size_calculator). Target water parameters for six common setup types — community freshwater tropical, goldfish/coldwater, African cichlid, planted tank, reef saltwater, and fish-only saltwater (water_parameter_guide). An explainer for the nitrogen cycle and a typical fishless-cycling timeline (cycling_guide). Care needs for six common aquarium plants (plant_care_guide), and a glossary of hobby terms (aquarium_glossary).

What it is not

Not a substitute for researching a specific species before you buy it, and not veterinary advice: compatibility_check matches temperament and behavior tags, not your tank's actual size, decor, or the personality of the individual fish you bring home, and stocking_calculator's inches-per-gallon rule deliberately ignores bioload, filtration capacity and aggression. Every relevant tool says so. For a sick or injured animal, consult an aquatic veterinarian or a fish-health specialist rather than relying on this reference alone.

Tools

Species

fish_species_info — Full care profile for one of 36 common freshwater and saltwater aquarium species: minimum tank size, temperament, water-parameter targets (pH/temperature), diet, and a care-level rating. Use for "what does a betta need", "tell me about neon tetras". General guidance only — always research a specific species' needs before purchase. Args: name.

fish_search — Search the species reference by keyword across name, category (freshwater/saltwater), temperament, behavior tags, diet and notes. Use for "peaceful schooling fish", "saltwater beginner fish", "algae eaters". Args: query.

Planning

compatibility_check — Checks a list of species against each other for known-incompatible pairings: aggressive-vs-peaceful temperament clashes, fin-nippers paired with long-finned species, territorial species that generally need their own tank, and freshwater/saltwater mismatches. Matches each species' own temperament/tag data — genuine pairwise logic, not a static list of bad pairs. Use for "can I keep a betta with tiger barbs", "is my stocking list compatible". Does not know your tank's size or decor — always research further before stocking. Args: species_list.

stocking_calculator — Applies the commonly-cited "one inch of adult fish per gallon" rule of thumb to a tank size and a stocking list of {name, quantity} entries. Use for "is 20 gallons enough for 8 neon tetras and 6 corydoras". This is a deliberately oversimplified guideline for small community freshwater fish only — it ignores bioload, filtration capacity, adult body shape, and aggression/territoriality. Always research further, and run compatibility_check, before finalizing a stocking plan. Args: tank_gallons, species_list.

tank_size_calculator — Computes real US gallons (and liters) from tank dimensions in inches: cubic inches (L x W x H) / 231 = US gallons. Use for "how many gallons is a 36x18x18 tank". Actual water volume is somewhat less once substrate, decor and headspace below the rim are accounted for. Args: length_in, width_in, height_in.

Reference

water_parameter_guide — Target pH, temperature and hardness ranges for common aquarium setup types (community freshwater tropical, goldfish/coldwater, African cichlid, planted tank, reef saltwater, fish-only saltwater). Use for "what pH does a reef tank need", "water parameters for African cichlids". Args: setup_type.

cycling_guide — Explains the nitrogen cycle (ammonia to nitrite to nitrate), the bacteria that drive it, a typical fishless-cycling timeline (commonly cited at 4-6 weeks), and practical tips for cycling a new tank safely. Use for "how does the nitrogen cycle work", "how long does it take to cycle a tank".

plant_care_guide — Care needs for common aquarium plants (Java fern, Anubias, Amazon sword, Java moss, Vallisneria, Cryptocoryne): light, CO2 and substrate needs, growth rate and difficulty. Use for "how do I care for java fern", "does anubias need CO2". Args: name.

aquarium_glossary — Definitions of common aquarium-hobby terms (nitrogen cycle, biological filtration, live rock, quarantine tank, fishless cycling, ammonia/nitrite/nitrate, GH/KH, specific gravity, bioload, ...). Use for "what's a quarantine tank", "what does KH mean". Args: term.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.

Reef — Privacy Policy

Effective 24 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What Reef is. Reef is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for a fully local aquarium stocking and fish-care reference: species profiles, a compatibility checker, stocking and tank-volume calculators, water-parameter guides, a nitrogen-cycling explainer, plant care and a glossary. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup or calculation.

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — a species name, a list of species, tank dimensions or a gallon figure, a setup type, or a glossary term — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is answered or computed from bundled, hand-curated reference files and nothing is stored. No request is forwarded to any third party — there is no upstream call at all, live or otherwise — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant, your name, or any information about a specific animal you own, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — the entire dataset is bundled with the server and answered locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. Reef is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

Reef — Terms of Service

Effective 24 September 2026. These terms govern use of the Reef connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. Reef returns a fully local aquarium stocking and fish-care reference — species profiles, a compatibility checker, stocking and tank-volume calculators, water-parameter guides, a nitrogen-cycling explainer, aquarium plant care, and a glossary — from hand-curated reference data. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. General guidance, not veterinary advice. Reef is an independent hobbyist reference, not affiliated with or endorsed by any manufacturer, retailer, or veterinary body. compatibility_check and stocking_calculator apply general rules of thumb to reference data — they do not know your specific tank, decor, or animals, and are not a substitute for researching a species' full needs before purchase. For a sick or injured animal, consult an aquatic veterinarian or a fish-health specialist.
  3. Facts and rules of thumb. Care ranges, compatibility tags and calculator guidelines reflect general hobbyist and published husbandry guidance as of the build date stated in the Service's own data; individual animals and setups vary, and this reference does not replace species-specific research.
  4. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  5. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time.
  6. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered or computed from bundled reference data, and nothing is stored.
  7. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  8. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any loss arising from use of or reliance on the Service, including any loss to livestock. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  9. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
