About

RouteGrade turns a route's distance and elevation change into the numbers a runner or hiker actually plans around. route_pace_estimate applies Naismith's Rule (1 hour per 5 km plus 1 hour per 600 m of ascent) with the Langmuir correction for descent — a steep descent adds time, a moderate one saves it — and reports the 'effective flat distance' the climbing is worth. climb_grade computes grade percentage (rise over run) and the matching angle in degrees for any climb or descent, with a plain-language steepness band from flat to very steep. route_difficulty scores a route with the U.S. National Park Service's published Shenandoah formula — the square root of elevation gain in feet times two times round-trip distance in miles — and sorts it into four documented tiers: easy, moderate, hard, strenuous. Every number comes from a published formula computed locally; there is no route database, no map data and no upstream call. Keyless; fully local; zero upstream calls; general route-planning information, not a substitute for checking real trail conditions.

Sources: Computed locally / hand-curated educational reference: Naismith's Rule (1892) with the Langmuir descent correction, standard rise/run grade geometry, and the U.S. National Park Service Shenandoah difficulty formula; fully local, zero upstream calls

What RouteGrade is for

The questions a runner or hiker asks before setting out, or while planning a route on a map: how long will this actually take given the climbing, how steep is that section really, and is this route an easy outing or a strenuous one.

What it does

Three calculators, each a documented, published formula computed from the numbers you give — no route database, no maps, no upstream calls. route_pace_estimate applies Naismith's Rule (1 hour per 5 km plus 1 hour per 600 m of ascent), with the Langmuir correction for descent (a steep descent adds time, a moderate one saves it), and reports the "effective flat distance" the climbing is worth. climb_grade computes grade percentage (rise ÷ run × 100) and the matching angle in degrees for any climb or descent, with a plain-language steepness band. route_difficulty scores a route with the U.S. National Park Service's Shenandoah formula — the square root of elevation gain (feet) × 2 × round-trip distance (miles) — and maps it to four published tiers: easy, moderate, hard, strenuous.

What it is not

Not a route planner, a map, or a substitute for checking real trail conditions, weather, exposure, technical terrain or your own fitness and experience. The formulas are general-purpose estimators from average hiking paces; a technical scramble, deep snow, heat or an unfit day can all make a route take much longer than any of these numbers suggest. Nothing you enter is stored.

RouteGrade — Privacy Policy

Effective 28 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What RouteGrade is. RouteGrade is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf to turn a route's distance and elevation change into a pace estimate, a grade percentage, or a difficulty score. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the numbers needed for that one calculation (a distance, an elevation gain/loss, a rise and run).

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call (distances, elevation figures, an optional walking speed), the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is computed on our server and nothing is stored. The calculators are formulas; there is no route database, no map data and no upstream call of any kind. The numbers you send are used for that one answer and are not recorded, logged in request bodies or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant, your name, your location, or any account credentials. We never learn where you actually went. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — every calculation runs locally with no upstream call. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. RouteGrade is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

RouteGrade — Terms of Service

Effective 28 September 2026. These terms govern use of the RouteGrade connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. RouteGrade computes run/hike route-difficulty numbers — a pace/time estimate, a grade percentage and angle, and a difficulty score and tier — from the distance and elevation figures you provide, using published formulas. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. Sources and methods. Calculations implement Naismith's Rule (1892) with the Langmuir descent correction, standard rise/run grade geometry, and the U.S. National Park Service's Shenandoah hiking-difficulty formula. These are long-published, widely reused formulas; RouteGrade's implementation of them is original.
  3. Not a substitute for judgment on the ground. These are general estimators built on average hiking paces and a single formula each; they do not know the technical difficulty, exposure, weather, surface or your own fitness on the day. Always check current conditions and a real map or guide for any route, and use your own judgment.
  4. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  5. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time.
  6. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered by computing on our server, and nothing is stored.
  7. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  8. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any loss, injury or damage arising from use of, or reliance on, the Service. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  9. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
