Real questions, and the tools your agent calls to answer them.
motif_infomotif_searchmotifs_by_pieceexample_patternterm_glossarydifficulty_levelfind_motif_for_positioncategory_listTactics is a hand-curated chess tactical-motifs reference, scoped exclusively to mid-game and endgame patterns (not opening theory). motif_info gives one motif's full detail: definition, mechanics, recognition cues, which pieces typically execute it, an original illustrative example pattern, common defenses, difficulty, and related motifs. motif_search does a keyword search across name, category, definition, mechanics and recognition cues. motifs_by_piece lists which motifs a given piece (knight, bishop, rook, queen, pawn, king) typically executes or is the target of. example_pattern returns just the short, original, invented illustrative pattern for one motif. term_glossary defines general tactical terminology (tactic, combination, sacrifice, tempo, luft, mating net, and more) distinct from the motifs themselves. difficulty_level reports a motif's tier (beginner, intermediate, advanced), what that tier generally means, and other motifs at the same tier. find_motif_for_position suggests 1-4 motifs matching a plain-language description of a board situation, like 'a piece can't move without exposing my king'. category_list lists every motif category with its count. Keyless; fully local; original explanations only — never a reproduction of any specific real, annotated, or copyrighted game.
Sources: Hand-curated original explanations of standard, well-documented chess tactical terminology as of build date; fully local, zero upstream calls

Not an official product of, or affiliated with, any brand, league, publisher, or organization it may factually mention. motif_info — Full detail for one tactical motif: definition, mechanics, recognition cues, which pieces typically execute it, an original illustrative example pattern, common defenses, difficulty, and related motifs. Use for "what is a fork", "explain the skewer", "how does a windmill work". Args: name.
motif_search — Keyword search across every motif's name, aliases, category, definition, mechanics and recognition cues. Use for "motifs involving the king", "anything about defenders being overloaded". Args: query.
category_list — Every tactical-motif category with how many motifs are in it. Use for "what categories of tactics do you cover".
motifs_by_piece — Which tactical motifs a given piece typically executes (or, for the king, is typically the target of), with a short note on why. Use for "what motifs does a knight typically pull off", "what tactics involve the rook". Args: piece.
difficulty_level — A motif's difficulty tier (beginner, intermediate, advanced), a note on what that tier generally means for a learner, and other motifs at the same tier worth studying together. Use for "how hard is it to spot a fork", "what's an easy motif to learn first", "what's as advanced as a windmill". Args: motif.
example_pattern — A short, original, invented illustrative description of what a typical example of this motif looks like on a board — not a reproduction of any real, annotated, or copyrighted game. Use for "show me an example of a fork", "what does a typical decoy sacrifice look like". Args: motif.
term_glossary — Definitions of general tactical terminology distinct from the motifs themselves — tactic, combination, sacrifice, forcing move, candidate move, en prise, the exchange, tempo, prophylaxis, combination breaker, mating net, luft. Use for "what's a zwischenzug" (also try motif_info first), "what does 'en prise' mean", "what's luft". Args: term.
find_motif_for_position — Suggests 1-4 tactical motifs that match a plain-language description of a board situation, keyword-matched against each motif's recognition cues, definition and mechanics. Use for "what's it called when a piece can't move without losing the king", "my opponent's rook is defending two squares at once, what tactic wins it". Args: description.

What Tactics is. Tactics is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for a hand-curated chess tactical-motifs reference — fork, pin, skewer, and 17 more, with examples. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.
What we receive. The arguments of each tool call, the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.
Everything is answered from a bundled, hand-curated reference file and nothing is stored. No request is forwarded to any third party — there is no upstream call at all, live or otherwise — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.
What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant or your name, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.
Sub-processors. None — the entire dataset is bundled with the server and answered locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).
Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.
Children. Tactics is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant.
Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.
