What Tempo is for

Time questions look trivial and are answered wrong constantly: the wrong side of a DST change, a "9 am" that is tomorrow in the other city, a deadline counted over a bank holiday, a Gulf weekend assumed to be Saturday–Sunday. Tempo does the arithmetic with the IANA time-zone database and a real holiday calendar, and says the date and offset with every time it returns.

What it does

The time now in any city or zone; a time converted from one place to many, with day changes flagged; a meeting planner that walks a day in 30-minute steps and keeps the slots where every city is inside its working hours (or shows the least-bad ones); the exact moments the clocks change in a zone; public holidays and long weekends for 200+ countries (Nager.Date, with regional holidays marked), the next holidays, and whether a date is one; business days between dates or N business days on, honouring each country's weekend and national holidays; date facts and arithmetic (week number, day of year, add months with end-of-month clamping, exact year/month/day gaps); and Unix timestamps in both directions.

What it is not

Tempo is not a calendar and holds no events. Holiday coverage follows Nager.Date (India is not included — see the Bharat connector); regional holidays are listed but not applied to business-day counts unless nationwide. Cities resolve through a 34,000-place gazetteer; give "City, Country" when a name is ambiguous.

Tools

Clocks

time_now — The current time in one or more cities or zones: local date and time, weekday, zone name and abbreviation, UTC offset, whether daylight saving is in effect, and the differences between them. Use for "what time is it in Tokyo", "world clock for my team's cities", "is London on BST right now". Args: places.

convert_time — Convert a time from one city or zone to others, with the date on each side (flagging day changes), offsets and DST state. Use for "3 pm Denver in Mumbai", "what is 09:00 UTC in Sydney and São Paulo", "when is 8pm ET for me in Berlin". Args: time, from_place, to_places.

meeting_planner — Find times when everyone is within working hours: for a date and 2–8 places, every hour-long slot (or your duration) where each place's local time is between earliest and latest, shown in every zone — and if none exists, the least-bad slots with who is outside hours. Use for "find a time for Denver, London and Bengaluru", "when can SF and Sydney talk". Args: places, day, earliest, latest, duration_minutes.

dst_changes — When the clocks change in a place or zone in a given year — the exact local and UTC moments, direction and offsets before/after — or that the zone has no DST. Use for "when do the clocks go back in the UK", "does Arizona change clocks", "next DST change in Sydney". Args: place, year.

Holidays

holidays — Public holidays for a country and year: date, weekday, name (English and local), whether nationwide or regional (with the regions), and type. 200+ countries. Use for "holidays in Germany 2027", "bank holidays in the UK this month", "is there a holiday in Japan next week". Args: country, year, month, nationwide_only.

next_holidays — The next public holidays coming up in a country, with how many days away each is. Use for "when is the next holiday in France", "what's the next long weekend opportunity". Args: country, limit.

is_holiday — Whether a date is a public holiday (or a weekend) in a country, and what the holiday is. Use for "is Monday a holiday in Germany", "are banks open in the US on 11 November". Args: country, day.

long_weekends — Long weekends in a country for a year — start and end dates, length, and whether a bridge day (a day off) is needed to make it. Use for "long weekends in Germany next year", "when can I take one day off for four days away". Args: country, year.

Date maths

business_days — Business-day arithmetic: how many working days between two dates, or the date N working days from a start — skipping weekends (Sat–Sun, or the country's, e.g. Fri–Sat in Saudi Arabia) and, with a country, its national public holidays. Use for "working days until 15 December", "what date is 10 business days from today in the UK", "SLA deadline". Args: start, end, add_days, country.

date_math — Date facts and arithmetic: a date's weekday, ISO week, day of year, quarter, days in month, leap year; add or subtract days/weeks/months/years; and the exact gap to another date (a countdown or an age) in days, weeks, months and years. Use for "what day is 90 days from now", "how many days until Christmas", "what week number is today", "how old is someone born 1990-05-14". Args: day, add_days, add_weeks, add_months, add_years, until.

unix_time — Convert between Unix timestamps and readable dates: a timestamp (seconds or ms) → UTC and a chosen zone; an ISO datetime → timestamp; or the current epoch. Use for "what date is 1790000000", "epoch for 2026-12-25 midnight UTC", "current unix time". Args: value, display_in.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.
