What Coinwise is for

The crypto questions people actually ask an assistant — what's bitcoin at, why is SOL down, what is this token, what are my coins worth, is now a cheap time to send BTC, what's gas, did my deposit land, is USDT holding its peg — answered from public market and chain data, read-only.

What it never does

Coinwise holds no keys, never signs or sends a transaction, never asks for a seed phrase (a public address is enough for balances, and anything that looks like a seed phrase is refused), and never recommends buying or selling. Every answer carries a disclaimer and the source and time of the data.

Sources

  • CoinGecko (free public API): prices, changes, market caps, profiles, history, trending. Coinwise bundles the top 500 coins' ids so most lookups need no search call, and caches prices for 60 seconds to stay well inside the free rate limit.
  • DefiLlama: TVL by chain and protocol, stablecoin supply and prices.
  • mempool.space: Bitcoin fees, mempool, hashrate, difficulty adjustment, address balances and recent transactions.
  • Public Ethereum JSON-RPC (publicnode.com): ETH balances, ERC-20 balances for USDT, USDC, DAI, WETH, WBTC, LINK and UNI, gas price and fee history. EIP-7702 delegated wallets are recognised and not mislabelled as contracts.
  • alternative.me: the Fear & Greed index.

Cost-of-transaction figures use typical sizes (140 vB Bitcoin transfer; 21k/65k/150k gas for an ETH transfer, ERC-20 transfer and swap) and current prices; actual costs vary with the wallet's construction of the transaction.

Tools

Prices

price — Current price with 1h/24h/7d/30d/1y changes, 24h range, market cap and rank, volume, supply and distance from the all-time high, for up to twenty coins. Use for "what's bitcoin at", "how's ETH doing this week", "SOL price in EUR". Args: coins, currency.

coin_profile — What a coin is: description, categories, launch date, consensus, chains it lives on, supply and market cap, ATH/ATL, links (site, whitepaper, explorers, GitHub), community sentiment, developer activity and any public notice CoinGecko has posted. Use for "what is Chainlink", "is this token legit", "when did Solana launch". Args: coin.

price_history — Price over a window: start/end, high and low with dates, average, total change, max drawdown from the window's peak and volatility (standard deviation of daily returns), plus a compact series (~30 points). Use for "how did BTC do this month", "what was the low in the last 90 days", "how volatile has SOL been". Args: coin, days, currency.

compare_coins — Side by side: price, market cap and rank, 24h/7d/30d/1y change, volume-to-market-cap ratio, supply issued vs max, and distance from ATH, with who leads on each. Use for "ETH vs SOL", "compare the top L2s", "which has more of its supply out". Args: coins, currency.

convert — Convert between a coin and a fiat currency, or coin to coin, at the current price. Use for "how much is 0.3 BTC in dollars", "what's $500 in ETH", "how many SOL is one ETH". Args: amount, from_asset, to_asset.

Your holdings

portfolio_value — Value a list of holdings at current prices: total, per-coin value and allocation, 24h change in money terms, and P&L against the cost basis when given — computed for this call only; nothing is stored. Use for "what's my crypto worth", "how much am I up on my ETH", "what's my allocation". Args: holdings, currency.

address_balance — Read-only balance of a public address: for Bitcoin the confirmed and pending BTC, transaction count and the last few transactions; for Ethereum the ETH balance, major ERC-20 balances (USDT, USDC, DAI, WETH, WBTC, LINK, UNI), whether it is a contract, and the USD value. Use for "how much is in this wallet", "did my deposit arrive", "check this address". Args: address.

Networks & markets

market_overview — The whole market at a glance: total cap and 24h change, BTC/ETH dominance, the Fear & Greed index with a week of history, the biggest 24h gainers and losers in the top 100, trending searches, and the top 10 by cap. Use for "how's crypto today", "is the market fearful", "what's pumping".

bitcoin_network — Bitcoin right now: recommended fees in sat/vB (and what a typical transfer costs in USD), mempool backlog, block height, hashrate, the difficulty adjustment in progress and the next halving estimate. Use for "is now a cheap time to send BTC", "when is the next halving", "how congested is bitcoin".

ethereum_gas — Ethereum gas right now: gas price, base fee and median priority tip in gwei, the trend over the last 20 blocks, and what an ETH transfer, an ERC-20 transfer and a typical swap cost in USD. Use for "what's gas", "is it a good time to swap", "how much does an ETH transfer cost right now".

defi_overview — DeFi by the numbers: total value locked by chain (top 15) and the largest protocols (filterable by chain and category) with TVL, 1d/7d change, chains and audit count. Use for "which chain has the most DeFi", "biggest lending protocols on Solana", "is TVL growing". Args: chain, category, limit.

stablecoins — Stablecoins by supply with mechanism (fiat-backed, crypto-backed, algorithmic), 7-day supply change, current price and peg deviation, with any that have slipped more than 0.5% flagged. Use for "is USDT holding its peg", "how big is USDC", "which stablecoins are growing". Args: limit.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.
