What Cosmos is for

Space and astronomy questions answered from the agencies and observatories that hold the data: NASA's photo and video archive, the confirmed-exoplanet census, JPL's asteroid and comet database with close-approach predictions, the SIMBAD reference for stars and deep-sky objects, NOAA's space-weather nowcasts and forecasts, the Sun's flares and sunspot cycle, spaceflight news, and astronaut careers.

What it does

NASA Image and Video Library: search 140,000+ public-domain items with thumbnails and descriptions; an item's full-size files. NASA Exoplanet Archive: search confirmed planets by name, host star, discovery year, method or facility, radius, mass, period, distance or a "temperate" filter, sorted by distance, date, size or temperature; one planet in full with its system; counts by year, method or facility. JPL: one asteroid or comet with orbit elements, period, Earth MOID, NEO and potentially-hazardous flags, size, albedo, rotation and spectral type, plus its Earth close approaches (recent, upcoming and closest ever); all close approaches to Earth or another planet in a window, with distance in lunar distances, speed and size. SIMBAD: type, spectral type, RA/Dec, parallax and distance, radial velocity or redshift, proper motion, magnitudes, naked-eye visibility and cross-identifiers. NOAA SWPC: NOAA R/S/G scales now and for three days, recent Kp, solar wind, 10.7 cm flux and alerts; the 3-day Kp forecast with storm levels and probabilities and the 27-day outlook; flares over 7 days, monthly sunspot numbers, the Cycle 25 peak so far, the 12-month prediction, and today's active regions. Spaceflight News API: articles, blogs and reports from 40+ outlets. Launch Library 2: an astronaut's agency, status, time in space, EVAs and missions.

What it is not

Cosmos does not compute what is visible from your location tonight, ISS passes, launch schedules or the picture of the day — those live in the Skywatch connector. Space-weather forecasts are NOAA's and change hourly; asteroid close-approach distances carry the uncertainty JPL reports (condition code). Launch Library's keyless tier allows 15 requests an hour, shared, so astronaut lookups are cached for a day and may report a temporary budget limit.

Tools

NASA imagery

nasa_images — Search NASA's Image and Video Library (140,000+ public-domain items): title, date, center, description, keywords, thumbnail and page link. Use for "photos of Apollo 11", "videos of the Artemis launch", "Hubble images of the Pillars of Creation", "JPL images of Europa". Args: query, media_type, year_from, year_to, center, max_results, page.

nasa_asset — Full-size files for one NASA library item (original, large, medium, small; video/audio media and captions) plus its metadata. Use for "give me the full-resolution version of that image". Args: nasa_id.

Exoplanets

exoplanet_search — Search 6,000+ confirmed exoplanets (NASA Exoplanet Archive composite parameters): name, host, discovery method/year/facility, orbit, radius and mass (Earth and Jupiter units), equilibrium temperature, size class, star properties and distance. Use for "nearest Earth-size planets", "temperate planets within 50 light-years", "planets found by JWST", "TRAPPIST-1 system", "planets discovered in 2025 by TESS". Args: name, host, year, method, facility, radius_min, radius_max, mass_max, period_max, distance_max_ly, temperate, sort, max_results.

exoplanet — One exoplanet in full, plus the other planets of its system. Use for "tell me about Proxima Centauri b", "how big is Kepler-452 b", "what's TRAPPIST-1 e like". Args: name.

exoplanet_stats — Counts of confirmed exoplanets by discovery year, method or facility, with the running total. Use for "how many exoplanets are known", "how many were discovered last year", "which telescope found the most". Args: by, max_results.

Asteroids, comets, stars

small_body — One asteroid or comet from JPL's Small-Body Database: orbit class and elements, period, Earth MOID, NEO and potentially-hazardous flags, size, albedo, rotation, spectral type, and its Earth close approaches (past and future, with distance in lunar distances and km). Use for "is Apophis dangerous", "how big is Bennu", "when does Halley's comet return", "what is 2024 YR4". Args: name.

close_approaches — Asteroid and comet close approaches to Earth (or another planet) in a date window: name, date/time, distance in lunar distances / km / AU, relative speed, absolute magnitude and diameter (measured or estimated range). Use for "asteroids passing closer than the Moon this month", "anything big coming close this year", "close approaches to Mars in 2027". Args: days, date_from, max_distance_ld, body, hazardous_only, min_size_h, max_results.

sky_object — A star or deep-sky object from SIMBAD: object type, spectral type, coordinates (RA/Dec), parallax and distance in light-years, radial velocity or redshift, proper motion, V/B/J/K magnitudes, naked-eye visibility and cross-identifiers. Use for "how far is Betelgeuse", "what type of star is Vega", "where is M31 in the sky", "what is NGC 7000". Args: name.

Space weather & Sun

space_weather — Space weather right now from NOAA SWPC: NOAA scales (R radio blackout, S solar radiation, G geomagnetic) with the 3-day scale outlook, recent Kp values and any storm level, real-time solar wind (speed, Bt, Bz), 10.7 cm radio flux, and watches/warnings/alerts issued in the last 3 days. Use for "is there a geomagnetic storm", "aurora chances tonight", "any solar storm warnings".

space_weather_forecast — NOAA SWPC's 3-day forecast: Kp by 3-hour block for each day with storm levels, max Kp per day, radio blackout and solar radiation storm probabilities, and the forecasters' text; optionally the 27-day outlook. Use for "will there be aurora this weekend", "geomagnetic forecast for the next 3 days", "quiet or active Sun next month". Args: outlook_27_day.

solar_activity — The Sun's activity: solar flares in the last 7 days (count, strongest, latest, M/X count), monthly sunspot numbers for the past year with the Solar Cycle 25 peak so far, the 12-month prediction, and today's numbered active regions with size and location. Use for "any big flares this week", "where are we in the solar cycle", "how many sunspots are there today".

Use for "how long has Peggy Whitson spent in space", "which missions did Sunita Williams fly", "who is Rakesh Sharma". Args: name.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.
