saying_infosaying_searchsayings_by_themerandom_sayingequivalent_finderregional_variant_notesaying_of_the_dayliteral_vs_idiomatic_explainerglossarysaying_infoDitado (Saying) is a hand-curated reference of traditional Brazilian Portuguese ditados populares (popular sayings) and provérbios — older, more formal sayings that each carry a life lesson, distinct from the sibling connector Gíria (Slang), which covers modern colloquial slang. saying_info gives one saying's Portuguese text, a literal word-for-word English translation, its real meaning/lesson, the closest English equivalent idiom where one genuinely exists (left empty rather than forced), and a usage example sentence in Portuguese with an English translation. saying_search does a keyword search across Portuguese text, translation, meaning and theme. sayings_by_theme groups sayings by theme: friendship, money, time, wisdom/patience, love, work/perseverance, caution/prudence, family. random_saying returns one at random. equivalent_finder takes either an English idiom/proverb or a Portuguese saying and finds the closest match in the other language from this dataset, only when a genuinely close equivalent exists. regional_variant_note says, where documented, whether a saying has a known wording difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese. saying_of_the_day returns a deterministic pick for today's date, the same for everyone asking that day. literal_vs_idiomatic_explainer explicitly contrasts a saying's literal, word-for-word translation against what it actually means — built for language learners. glossary distinguishes "ditado", "provérbio", "gíria" and "expressão idiomática" as categories, plus short grammar notes (the indefinite "quem", the reflexive/impersonal "se"). Keyless; fully local, zero upstream calls; a hand-curated, family-friendly reference verified as of its build date.

The moment a Brazilian friend, a grandmother, a telenovela character or a WhatsApp message drops a line like "água mole em pedra dura" or "cavalo dado não se olha os dentes" and the words alone don't tell you what's actually meant — answered from one hand-curated reference of traditional ditados populares (popular sayings) and provérbios (proverbs), not a scroll through forum threads or a shaky machine translation.
This is a companion to, and deliberately distinct from, the sibling connector Gíria (Slang): gíria covers fast-moving, informal slang words and expressions, while Ditado covers the older, more formal, complete sayings that each carry a life lesson — the kind a grandparent would say, not the kind you'd hear at a party.
Look up over eighty real, well-known Brazilian Portuguese ditados and provérbios: each one's Portuguese
text, a literal word-for-word English translation, its real meaning or life lesson, a usage example
sentence in Portuguese with an English translation, and — only where one genuinely exists — the closest
equivalent English idiom or proverb (saying_info); search by keyword across every saying's text,
translation, meaning and theme (saying_search); browse by theme — friendship, money, time, wisdom and
patience, love, work and perseverance, caution and prudence, or family (sayings_by_theme); pull a random
saying (random_saying); go either direction between an English idiom and a Brazilian saying to find the
closest match this dataset actually has (equivalent_finder); check whether a saying is known to have a
different form in European Portuguese versus Brazilian Portuguese (regional_variant_note); get a
deterministic saying of the day, the same for everyone asking on a given date (saying_of_the_day);
contrast a saying's literal, word-for-word translation against its real idiomatic meaning side by side, for
language learners who'd otherwise be confused reading it literally (literal_vs_idiomatic_explainer); and
look up short glossary entries distinguishing "ditado", "provérbio", "gíria" and "expressão idiomática" as
categories, plus a couple of grammar notes that come up constantly in these sayings — the indefinite "quem"
and the reflexive/impersonal "se" (glossary).
Not a live translation service and not an exhaustive academic proverb corpus — Ditado (Saying) is a hand-curated reference, verified as of the build date stated in its own data, covering the sayings a learner or a curious visitor is actually likely to run into. Oral proverbs vary in exact wording across region, generation and household, so treat the Portuguese text here as the well-known standard form rather than the only correct one. English equivalents are given only where a genuinely close idiom or proverb exists in English; many Brazilian sayings simply don't have one, and this connector says so honestly instead of forcing a mismatched comparison. The dataset is kept family-friendly on purpose. For a rare, hyper-local, or brand-new saying not covered here, ask a native speaker.
saying_info — Look up one Brazilian Portuguese ditado/provérbio: its Portuguese text, a literal English translation, its real meaning/lesson, the closest English equivalent idiom where one genuinely exists, and a usage example sentence in Portuguese with an English translation. Use for "what does 'água mole em pedra dura' mean", "explain the saying about the gift horse". Args: text_or_query.
saying_search — Search across every saying's Portuguese text, literal translation, meaning, English equivalent and themes for a keyword. Use for "find sayings about money", "any Brazilian proverb about patience". Args: query.
sayings_by_theme — List every saying tagged with one theme -- friendship, money, time, wisdom/patience, love, work/perseverance, caution/prudence, or family. Use for "show me Brazilian sayings about friendship", "proverbs about money in Portuguese". Args: theme.
random_saying — A random Brazilian Portuguese saying from the full dataset. Use for "give me a random Brazilian proverb", "teach me a Portuguese saying". Args: seed.
saying_of_the_day — A deterministic "saying of the day" -- the same ditado for everyone asking on a given calendar date -- with its full explanation. Use for "saying of the day", "teach me a Brazilian proverb for today".
equivalent_finder — Given either an English idiom/proverb or a Portuguese saying, finds the closest match in the other language from this dataset -- only when a genuinely close equivalent exists in the bundled data, never a forced match. Use for "what's the Brazilian saying for 'the grass is greener'", "is there an English equivalent for 'água mole em pedra dura'". Args: text.
regional_variant_note — Where documented, notes whether a saying has a known wording or usage difference between European Portuguese and Brazilian Portuguese. Most sayings have no documented split and this says so honestly rather than inventing one. Use for "is this saying used in Portugal too", "does 'água mole' have a Portugal version". Args: saying.
literal_vs_idiomatic_explainer — Explicitly contrasts a saying's word-for-word literal translation against what it actually, idiomatically means -- built for language learners who'd otherwise be confused reading it literally. Use for "what does 'farinha pouca, meu pirão primeiro' literally say vs actually mean". Args: saying.
glossary — A short glossary distinguishing "ditado", "provérbio", "gíria" and "expressão idiomática" as categories, plus grammar notes relevant to reading these sayings (the indefinite "quem", the reflexive/impersonal "se"). Use for "what's the difference between a ditado and a provérbio", "what does 'quem' mean in these sayings". Args: term.
ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.agent@connectorbay.com · connectorbay.com/ditado/support

What Ditado (Saying) is. Ditado (Saying) is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for a hand-curated reference of traditional Brazilian Portuguese proverbs and idiomatic sayings: saying lookups and search, theme browsing, an equivalent finder, regional notes, a literal-vs-idiomatic explainer, a saying of the day, and a small glossary. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.
What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — a saying, a search keyword, a theme, an English phrase, or a glossary term — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.
Everything is answered from a bundled, hand-curated reference file and nothing is stored. No request is forwarded to any third party — there is no upstream call at all, live or otherwise — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.
What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant or your name, and we do not build a profile from your queries: each request is answered independently and nothing carries over between requests. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.
Sub-processors. None — the entire dataset is bundled with the server and answered locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).
Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.
Children. Ditado (Saying) is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant. The dataset is kept family-friendly on purpose.
Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.
