About

Idpguide is a hand-curated, general reference on International Driving Permit (IDP) expectations. idp_requirement gives one country's category — commonly required, commonly recommended, not typically needed, or not recognized at all — plus notes. compare_countries lines up several countries side by side. countries_by_category browses the 40-country dataset; countries_list and category_glossary show coverage and meaning. special_permit_countries lists countries like China, Brazil, Uruguay and Trinidad and Tobago that don't accept the standard IDP and require a different local or regional document instead. convention_info explains the 1949 Geneva vs 1968 Vienna convention split that underlies inconsistent recognition. general_idp_facts covers what's true everywhere: an IDP is not a stand-alone license, doesn't grant privileges you lack at home, expires with your home license, and must be obtained before you leave. pre_drive_checklist gives a practical, non-country-specific checklist beyond just the IDP question. GENERAL INFORMATION, NOT LEGAL ADVICE — requirements depend on your specific home country/state of licensing and what your car rental company independently demands. Always verify with an official source and your rental company before driving abroad. Keyless; fully local; nothing stored.

Sources: Hand-curated and cross-referenced from AAA/AATA-style International Driving Permit resources and general government/embassy driving-abroad guidance, via web search in September 2026; general information, not legal advice — always verify with an official source and your car rental company

What IDP Guide is for

"Do I need an international driving permit for Japan?", "which countries don't recognize the IDP at all?", "what should I check before driving abroad?" — the paperwork question that's easy to skip until you're standing at a rental counter.

What it does

idp_requirement gives one country's general category — commonly required, commonly recommended, not typically needed for a short tourist stay, or not recognized at all (needing a different local document instead) — plus practical notes. compare_countries lines up several countries side by side. countries_by_category browses the 40-country dataset by category; countries_list and category_glossary show exactly what's covered and what each category means. special_permit_countries calls out the countries where the standard IDP simply doesn't work — China requires a separate temporary local permit, and Brazil, Uruguay and Trinidad and Tobago instead need the Inter-American Driving Permit. convention_info explains why: most IDPs are issued under either the 1949 Geneva Road Traffic Convention or the 1968 Vienna Convention, and a country that follows one doesn't automatically recognize a permit built for the other. general_idp_facts covers what's true everywhere regardless of destination — an IDP is not a stand-alone license, doesn't grant privileges you lack at home, and must be obtained before you leave your own country. pre_drive_checklist rounds out the practical side: insurance, minimum age, local road rules, and keeping copies of your documents.

What it is not

General information, not legal advice. Whether an IDP is actually required for you depends on your specific home country or state of licensing, the destination's current rules, and — very often the deciding factor in practice — what your car rental company independently demands, which is frequently stricter than the law itself. Rules change. Always verify directly with the destination's official government or embassy source and your specific car rental company before driving abroad.

IDP Guide — Privacy Policy

Effective 26 September 2026. Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us"), Menlo Park, California.

What IDP Guide is. IDP Guide is a connector (an MCP server and REST API) that AI assistants and personal agents call on your behalf for a hand-curated International Driving Permit reference — lookups, comparisons, category browsing, a special-permit-countries list, a conventions explainer, general facts and a checklist. You interact with your assistant; the assistant sends us only the arguments needed for that one lookup.

What we receive. The arguments of each tool call — a country name, a category, or a list of countries to compare — the technical headers needed to serve the request (an IP address or a client identifier supplied by the assistant, and a Pro API key if you have one), and standard server logs.

Everything is answered from a bundled, hand-curated reference file and nothing is stored. No request is forwarded to any third party — there is no upstream call at all, live or otherwise — and no query is logged in request bodies, recorded, or used to train anything.

What we do not receive or store. We do not receive your conversation with the assistant, your name, your actual driving license details, or any identifying travel information — only the country and category names you or your assistant type into a lookup. We do not build a profile from your queries. Rate-limit counters (a client identifier and timestamps) are held in memory for at most 24 hours. Hosting-provider access logs, which contain IP addresses and request paths but not request bodies, are retained for up to 30 days for security and abuse prevention.

Sub-processors. None — the entire dataset is bundled with the server and answered locally. Hosting: Vercel (United States regions).

Legal bases and your rights. Our processing is necessary to provide the service you request through your assistant. Because we store no personal data beyond short-lived logs, requests to access, correct or delete personal data are usually satisfied automatically; you can still contact agent@connectorbay.com and we will respond within 30 days. We do not sell or share personal information and do not use your data to train models.

Children. IDP Guide is a general-audience service operated by the adult using the assistant.

Changes. We will post changes here with a new effective date.

Terms of service

IDP Guide — Terms of Service

Effective 26 September 2026. These terms govern use of the IDP Guide connector ("the Service") operated by Unify Dynamics LLC ("we", "us").

  1. The Service. IDP Guide returns a hand-curated, general reference on International Driving Permit expectations in 40 countries — category lookups, comparisons, category browsing, a special-permit-countries list, a conventions explainer, general facts and a pre-drive checklist. It is accessed through an AI assistant or directly over MCP or HTTP.
  2. General information, not legal advice. Whether an IDP is legally required for you depends on facts this Service does not know — your specific home country or state of licensing, the destination's current rules, and your car rental company's own (often stricter) policy. Nothing in this Service is a legal determination of what you personally need to drive in any country.
  3. Your responsibility. You are solely responsible for verifying actual IDP and driving-license requirements with the destination's official government or embassy source, and with your specific car rental company, before driving abroad. Reliance on this Service alone, without independent verification, is entirely at your own risk.
  4. Acceptable use. Automated use within the published rate limits is welcome.
  5. Availability. The Service is provided "as is" without warranty. We may change, limit or discontinue it at any time, and coverage may change between versions.
  6. Data. Our Privacy Policy describes what we process. In short: your query is answered from a bundled reference file, and nothing is stored.
  7. Pro keys. Optional Pro API keys are issued at our discretion, are personal to the holder and may be revoked for abuse.
  8. Liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Unify Dynamics LLC is not liable for any loss, including a denied car rental, a fine, or an invalidated insurance claim, arising from use of or reliance on this Service. Our total liability is limited to US $100.
  9. Governing law. California law; venue in San Mateo County, California.
