What Shortlist is for

The part of a job search that has nothing to do with finding a posting — is this resume actually well written, does it cover what this specific job description asks for, is this bullet point strong or weak, what do I say when I get an offer — answered locally, from hand-curated writing guidance and simple text analysis, without sending your resume or a job description anywhere outside this one call.

What it does

ats_keyword_match extracts meaningful keywords and phrases from a pasted job description (tokenization, stopword removal, and a multi-word noun-phrase heuristic — genuine text analysis, not a fixed lookup table) and checks which of them show up in a resume, returning a match percentage, the keywords that matched, and the ones worth considering adding. resume_readability analyzes a resume's bullet points for average length, how many open with a strong action verb versus a weak phrase like "responsible for", a passive-voice heuristic, and what share contain a number or metric. action_verb_suggestions gives strong verbs from a hand-curated library of 150+, organized by category (leadership, achievement, communication, technical, analytical, creative, organizational, collaboration, improvement) or looked up from a specific weak phrase. bullet_point_improver runs that same analysis on one bullet and shows the STAR/XYZ rewrite template. cover_letter_opener returns fill-in-the-blank opening-paragraph templates for four common hooks (achievement, connection/referral, mission-alignment, problem-solver) — a structural starting point, not a finished letter. interview_questions is a curated bank of 90 questions across six role categories (software engineering, sales, marketing, management, customer service, general) and three question types (behavioral, technical-general, situational). star_method_guide explains the STAR framework with a full worked example. resume_section_checklist lays out the expected sections and order for chronological, functional, and combination resumes. common_resume_mistakes lists mistakes and fixes by category (formatting, content, ATS-compatibility, tone). salary_negotiation_scripts gives adaptable phrasing for four common negotiation moments (initial offer, counter-offer, competing-offer leverage, benefits instead of salary).

What it is not

Not an ATS simulator and not a guarantee — Shortlist's keyword matching is a lightweight heuristic (simple tokenization and phrase extraction), and real applicant tracking systems vary enormously in how, or whether, they parse and weight a resume. A high match percentage here doesn't guarantee a resume clears any particular ATS, and following every suggestion here doesn't guarantee an interview or an offer. It's also not a resume- writing AI: cover letter openers and bullet-improvement suggestions are structured templates and heuristics to adapt with your own true, specific details, not generated prose written for you. And it never calls any outside service or database — everything is either your own submitted text, analyzed locally, or a bundled hand-curated reference file.

Tools

Match & write

ats_keyword_match — Extracts meaningful keywords/skills from a job description (tokenization, stopword removal, and a multi-word noun-phrase heuristic — not a fixed lookup table) and checks which appear in the resume text. Returns a match percentage, the matched keywords, and the missing keywords worth considering. Use for "does my resume match this job posting", "what keywords am I missing for this job". Args: resume_text, job_description_text.

resume_readability — Analyzes a resume's bullet points: average bullet length, strong action-verb openers vs weak openers ("responsible for", "worked on", ...), a passive-voice heuristic, and the percentage of bullets that contain a number or metric. Use for "is my resume well written", "check my resume bullets". Args: resume_text.

bullet_point_improver — Heuristic suggestions for improving a single resume bullet: flags a missing metric, a weak opener, and possible passive voice, and shows the STAR/XYZ template ("Accomplished X as measured by Y by doing Z") with a worked example. Use for "how can I improve this bullet point". Args: bullet_text.

action_verb_suggestions — Suggests strong action verbs from a hand-curated, categorized library of 150+ verbs, given either a weak phrase to replace (e.g. "responsible for", "helped with") or a category name directly. Use for "give me stronger verbs than 'responsible for'", "leadership action verbs for a resume". Args: weak_phrase_or_category.

Cover letters & interviews

cover_letter_opener — Fill-in-the-blank cover-letter opening-paragraph templates — achievement-focused, connection/referral- focused, mission-alignment-focused, or problem-solver-focused. A structural template to adapt with your own true details, not a finished, AI-written letter. Use for "give me a cover letter opener for X at Y". Args: role, company, hook_type.

interview_questions — A hand-curated bank of common interview questions by role category and question type (90 questions total across 6 role categories x 3 types). Use for "give me behavioral interview questions for a sales role", "situational questions for a management interview". Args: role_category, question_type.

star_method_guide — Explains the STAR (Situation, Task, Action, Result) interview-answer framework with a full worked example and tips for prepping stories in advance. Use for "what's the STAR method", "how do I structure a behavioral interview answer".

Reference

resume_section_checklist — The expected sections and order for a chronological, functional, or combination resume, with what each section should contain and who each format best suits. Use for "what sections should my resume have", "how do I structure a functional resume". Args: resume_type.

common_resume_mistakes — A hand-curated list of common resume mistakes with fixes, by category (formatting, content, ATS- compatibility, tone), or every category if none is given. Use for "what are common resume mistakes", "resume formatting mistakes to avoid". Args: category.

salary_negotiation_scripts — Example scripts and phrasing for common salary-negotiation scenarios — starting-point templates to adapt with your own numbers and voice, not guaranteed outcomes. Use for "how do I negotiate a job offer", "what do I say to counter a low offer". Args: scenario.

Conventions

  • Read-only. Every tool reads public data or computes; nothing is written anywhere and nothing about the user is stored.
  • Result envelope. ok: true with data, or ok: false with a structured error (bad_input, not_found, upstream_error). degraded lists optional sources that were unreachable.
  • Rate limits. Free tier 60 tool calls/minute and 300/day per user (keyed on the user identifier supplied by the host agent, else client IP); Pro keys raise this. Over-limit calls return HTTP 429 with Retry-After. initialize and tools/list are never counted.
